, May 10th 2012 Discuss [0]

Nokia has secured victory in its ongoing legal battle with IPCom, with a UK appeals court today ruling that none of the Finnish firm's current products infringe a contentious 3G patent. IPCom had appealed a UK High Court ruling last year which found that the patent in question was not valid as granted; last month, the European Patent Office overturned the patent, though the appeals court today agreed that some of Nokia's old products would have clashed with it. , Apr 25th 2012 Discuss [0]

Nokia may have been having a rough week last week, but a little patent good news today has put a smile on the Finns' faces. Having been found guilty of infringing a patent owned by IPCom with its N96 smartphone last year, the European Patent Office has now overturned the patent and deemed it invalid. Nonetheless, with the N96 being superseded all the way back in mid-2009, Nokia actually had no products on the market for IPCom to block sales of. Read The Full Story

, Apr 4th 2012 Discuss [0]

Big news today is Nokia’s US re-entry, with the Lumia 900 scoring some cautiously congratulatory reviews – ours included – at an ambitious AT&T price point and the heft of Microsoft behind it. Of course, the LTE Lumia goes up against a serious smartphone heavyweight, with Apple’s iPhone 4 dominating the same $99 niche. It may be the last-gen model, but the iPhone 4 is still a mighty popular device and the iOS and App Store combination makes for a strong argument. Strap on your smartphone helmets, people, it’s time to get competitive.

The news, supposedly shared with them directly from a source in the Next Billion Group itself NetbookNews reports, would come as some relief to MeeGo fans, who had seen Nokia marginalize the platform in its smartphone push out of preference for Windows Phone. Nokia N9 hardware and Android Ice Cream Sandwich: be still our beating hearts. The list of working functionality is surprisingly long, too, given its alpha status: multitouch, 3D drivers and OpenGL, and GSM/3G connectivity are all playing ball. Read The Full Story

Nokia: Apple’s nano-SIM design is flawed

, Mar 22nd 2012 Discuss [0]

Nokia has fired back at Apple over nano-SIM suggests, issuing a heated statement about the next-gen cards that accuses the Cupertino-backed standard of being more prone to damage, user confusion and - most damning - not especially elegant a design. Apple supposedly threw the cat among the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) pigeons with its proposal for a tray-borne nano-SIM format, according to reports earlier this week, with concerns that the company was trying to force through its scheme by some less-than-gentlemanly vote juggling.
