A Week with the Nokia N8: Can Symbian Survive?

A Week with the Nokia N8: Can Symbian Survive?

I'm in London this week at Nokia World and it's a defining moment for Nokia. Last week Nokia announced their CEO's departure, and new CEO (and Microsoft alum) Stephen Elop. Nokia phones once defined state of the art and the S60 platform defined the modern smartphone era in 2002. Today, in a world dominated by news of the latest Android and iOS devices, Nokia looks to drive forward their relevance and innovation.

Among the plethora of news, one of the highlights is Nokia officially unveiling the N8, their flagship device for the Symbian^3 platform. I've been using one for the last week or so and I can safely say it's the best Symbian phone I've ever used. The question remains, though: is that good enough in today's competitive market?

Nokia N8 clone runs Android, sheds megapixels

Nokia N8 clone runs Android, sheds megapixels

Nokia continue to insist that they have no plans to ditch Symbian or MeeGo in favor of Android, and so we'll have to get our Google/Finn crossover kicks in unofficial ways.  Chinese firm iZiNN has cloned the Nokia N8 and slapped a copy of Android 2.1 on their copy, the CJ-3; it lacks the original's 12-megapixel camera (making do with just 5-megapixels) but does keep the HDMI output and 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen.

Nokia N8 preorders cancelled by Amazon Germany

Nokia N8 preorders cancelled by Amazon Germany

Amazon Germany has apparently begun cancelling Nokia N8 preorders, according to FinestFones, informing customers by email that while the retailer had attempted to source the smartphone in a timely manner, they had been unable to do so with the Symbian^3 smartphone.  Interestingly, they also say that while they try to ensure their database is up to date, manufacturers sometimes change their release plans; it's unclear whether Nokia has been delayed in its release intentions for the N8, which many had expected sometime in August.

Nokia N8-02 (aka “N9”) gets video demo & specs

Nokia's latest QWERTY smartphone is out there in the wild, and up until now the most confusing thing about it is knowing exactly what it might be called.  Variously tipped as the N9, N8-01, one of multiple Eseries names and more, all we know is that TechnoBuffalo has managed to grab some hands-on time and have come away with not only some more definitive specs but a comparison shot with the iPhone 3GS and the HTC EVO 4G.

Nokia N8 first-impressions [Video]

Nokia N8 first-impressions [Video]

Nokia's N8 remains one of the more interesting smartphones of 2010, and we leapt at a chance to have an extended play with the Symbian^3 handset as it made its debut in London this morning. Toting a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen with multitouch support, 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, 720p HD video recording and a Xenon flash, and a slick anodised aluminium chassis, our biggest question was whether Nokia's OS fettling had been enough to make the N8 competitive with what's an increasingly competitive smartphone market. Check out our impressions - and some hands-on video - after the cut.

Nokia continue to drip out new information about the Nokia N8's abilities, and after the impressive photo and video editing demonstration earlier it's now the turn of multimedia playback to briefly hog the spotlight.  According to Blog-N8.fr, a French Nokia representative confirmed that the N8 would be able to natively play DivX encoded videos, along with the H.264, MPEG4 and other formats mentioned at the handset's official launch.

Nokia N8 video editing & photo processing gets video demo

Nokia has released their second N8 walkthrough video - the first was an overview of Symbian^3 - and topically they're talking about on-device media editing.  Like the iPhone 4, the N8 can be used to piece together video and images on a timeline, complete with transitions and titles, while there's also an onboard photo editor app for cropping, colour adjustments and adding clipart.  Best of all, thanks to USB Host support you'll be able to hook up an external drive to easily transfer off your newly-edited content.
