Right price, spec, buzz… so how will AT&T, Microsoft and Nokia screw up the Lumia 900?

Back in January, in the aftermath of Nokia revealing the Lumia 900 Windows Phone flagship, we argued that AT&T should price the smartphone at $100 at the most if it wanted to compete with the iPhone. Today, the carrier confirmed that it would indeed be undercutting most new handsets with a $99.99 price point - albeit with a two-year price plan - ticking off at least one box against the new Lumia's launch. Nonetheless, there are still plenty of pitfalls ahead if AT&T, Nokia and Microsoft don't want it to be game over for Windows Phone.

How Low Can Nokia Go?

How Low Can Nokia Go?

Nokia is ramping up for a far more interesting Mobile World Congress than in recent years: having opted out of a presence in 2011, rumors have it that the Finns have at least two new Windows Phones to bolster their range. After the original Lumia 800 and 710, and the imminent Lumia 900 headed to AT&T, we're also told to expect a new, higher-end device in the shape of a European 900 variant, along with an entry-level model that should cater to a more affordable price point. Question is, with Symbian's appeal souring ahead of schedule, has Nokia done enough to shave away smartphone pricing.

Nokia Lumia 800 is jet fighter tough, survives MACH 5 wind tunnel test

And yes, it survived and phoned home just fine after the extreme test. You can watch the video after the cut.

Nokia: We’ve nowhere to go but Windows Phone

Nokia has reiterated that it has no second strategy should its partnership with Microsoft around Windows Phone fail, with VP Victor Saeijes insisting that"Plan B is that Plan A must succeed." Although Nokia pushed out a Symbian update earlier this week, bringing its old platform up to speed with the latest Nokia Belle iteration, the only way forward is Windows Phone, Saeijes told Swedish paper Dagens Industri, even if that means playing catch-up in the smartphone industry.
