Nokia Lumia 1520 hands-on

Nokia Lumia 1520 hands-on

Nokia's new flagship Lumia 1520 is big news and a big phone. The company's first "phablet" Windows Phone, it marks the debut of official 1080p screen support in version 8.1 of Microsoft's platform, not to mention a further distillation of Nokia's investment into PureView camera technology down into the mass market. It's also the device that Nokia hopes will rival top-tier iPhone and Android handsets that, so far, it has struggled to compete with. Plenty of high expectations, then, but does the Lumia 1520 live up to them? Read on for our first impressions.

Nokia Lumia 1320 puts WP8 on a 6-inch midrange phablet

Nokia has two phablets to eventually get Windows Phone 8.1, the flagship Lumia 1520 and the more affordable Lumia 1320, a 6-inch smartphone for the mainstream. Using a 720p display rather than the Full HD of the 1520, the Nokia Lumia 1320 keeps the LTE of its more expensive sibling but scales back on the processor, with the Finnish firm opting for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 dualcore. Most disappointing, perhaps, is missing out on the PureView camera technology.

Nokia and Mercedes self-driving car project taps HERE research

Nokia and Mercedes Benz will work together on self-driving cars, the companies have confirmed, with Nokia's HERE developing metadata-rich navigation and mapping data with extra information for robot drivers. The partnership, which comes alongside deals between Nokia HERE and both Continental Corporation and Magneti Marelli, takes map data and bakes in aspects like how many lanes there are, what direction they go in, what traffic signs are along the route, and the precise location of traffic lights, so that autonomous cars will better understand the roads they are using.

Nokia HERE Research: We talk Smart Cities, ethical tracking & self-driving cars

If you're carrying a smartphone or driving a modern car, you're a potential probe, and Nokia would love to unlock your location for its HERE Maps services. The company already has its own gathering programs in place yet, for all its gigabytes of daily data, Nokia's HERE 3D mapping car is only one part of a navigation data analysis program that combines 80,000 sources from across the globe. We sat down with Jane MacFarlane, head of HERE Research at Nokia, and along with her team responsible for making sense of the masses of data, to find out why being a probe might one day help you avoid traffic jams, travel more safely, and even discover the hottest new restaurants, all thanks to the "wisdom of crowds".

Nokia Lumia 521 vs Samsung Galaxy S II: budget boxing

Nokia Lumia 521 vs Samsung Galaxy S II: budget boxing

Thought Samsung has long since moved on from the second-generation Galaxy and tech news in general forgets about essentially any phone (even the Lumia 520) almost without fail once they've been out for a short period of time, there's a battle going on at T-Mobile between these two machines. Both the Nokia Lumia 521 (as it's called when you see it working with T-Mobile) and the Samsung Galaxy S II are currently tagged "Top Seller" on the carrier's stock listings, this honor only otherwise given to the HTC One and iPhone 5 at this very moment. What makes this set of devices so special?

Nokia Lumia 1020 Review

Nokia Lumia 1020 Review

Nokia's Lumia 1020 PureView might not need an introduction, but it may need an explanation. Announced with no small amount of fanfare (and hyperbole from Nokia CEO Stephen Elop) the new Windows Phone borrows Nokia's photography tricks from the notably-niche 808 PureView of 2012, refining it with Microsoft's OS and a more streamlined form-factor to make an attempt at the mass-market. That mass-market will get the Lumia 1020 on AT&T from July 26, but the 41-megapixel marvel has already been on the SlashGear test bench, so read on for our full review.
