Android market share swells 886% year-on-year in Q2 2010; RIM and Apple trail behind

Smartphone demand is up, and the winner is Android according to market analysts Canalys.  They've been tracking US and global trends, and reckon that in Q2 2010 Android sales rose 886-percent from last year (851-percent in the US), giving them the number one market share in the US with 34-percent; they're trailed, supposedly, by RIM at 32-percent of market share and Apple at 21.7-percent.

Curious to know how T-Mobile USA will be pushing the HTC HD2 - a phone already available in Europe for several months now, and guaranteed not to get an official Windows Phone 7 update - when it goes on sale come March 24th?  Over at Pocketables they've a stash of in-store T-Mobile promotional material sent over from an anonymous tipster, and it looks like the carrier will be leaning heavily on the HD2's media playback abilities.

Details of T-Mobile USA's upcoming handset launches have emerged, with TmoNews claiming to have release dates for several Android, Windows Mobile and other devices.  Perhaps of most interest is the HTC HD2, previously confirmed for T-Mobile in the Spring and now expected in March 2010; we're also curious about two new HTC Android phones, the T-Mobile myTouch Slide (which looks like it could be a QWERTY version of the HTC Magic/myTouch 3G) coming May 17th, and before that an update to the HTC myTouch 3G (described as v1.2) which throws in a 3.5mm headphone socket on February 10th.

Weeks are flying by and it's time for another week in review. Monday we learned that a new hack was available from the iPhone Dev Team that adds MMS to first generation iPhones and tethering to 3.1.2 OS for the later iPhone models. We also found out that Microsoft is set to issue a new update for the Xbox 360 that will break unauthorized storage devices. That means that some gamers will be unable to access the saved game data after applying the new update.

The end of the week is here again and here we go with a rundown of some of the coolest stories we have seen this week. Monday marked the day the Asus Eee PC 1101HA went on sale in America. The rig is a netbook in name only; the beastie is expensive at about $430. The same day Gigabyte quietly unveiled the T1028X convertible touchscreen netbook. The device has a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and other than the screen, the rest of the machine is typical netbook fare.
