Nissan self-driving Leaf first to ride on Japanese roads

Nissan is taking its self-driving car to the roads of Japan, securing a street-legal license plate for its autonomous Leaf prototype so that it can begin public testing. The car - which took us for a self-driving spin back in August - uses an amped-up version of Nissan's Safety Shield technology, and is part of the Japanese company's aim to have autonomous vehicles ready for the masses by 2020.

Nissan Safety Shield upgrade makes Leaf EV self-driving

Nissan has demonstrated a new version of its Safety Shield technology, adding 360-degree sensors to a custom Leaf EV that, with onboard AI, tease the company's ongoing work on autonomous, self-driving cars. Safety Shield, the first version of which will debut on production Nissans later this year, monitors activity around the car; in its new prototypes, shown off for the first time at Nissan 360, the Leaf adds to those senses with full camera coverage from every angle to track potential risks, pedestrians, other vehicles, and road signs.

Nissan gives the Leaf a new energy-efficient Bose audio system

Typically, when we think of electric vehicles and driving range, we only think about the electric motors that actually propel the vehicle. However, electric vehicles have more than the electric motors that draw power from the battery. Inside the electric vehicle the HVAC system, infotainment system, and any other electronics have to get the power they need to operate directly from the battery packs.

Nissan blasts Top Gear for misleading Leaf EV critique

Nissan blasts Top Gear for misleading Leaf EV critique

BBC motoring show Top Gear has been accused of purposefully sabotaging the performance of Nissan's Leaf electric car, in an attempt to make the earth-friendly auto look less reliable in a TV segment. While in the road test, outspoken host Jeremy Clarkson was shown running out of power in the Leaf, miles away from a recharging point, Nissan says that subsequent review of the data the car collects indicates that the test was begun with the batteries at just 40-percent and that Top Gear intentionally drove in circles to further reduce that charge.

The most expensive car to insure… is a Nissan?

When affordable motoring is the topic, Nissan declaring war on your wallet isn't the first thing that would usually come to mind, but one of the company's cars has the (perhaps unpleasant) crown in insurance expense. The Nissan GT-R Nismo is, with a price tag that starts at almost $150k, hardly in the same league as your average Sentra or Leaf, and the even-more-ridiculously-powerful version of an already capable sports car will take a sizable bite out of your budget when it comes to insurance, too, according to some new research of what's on forecourts in 2015.
