Nikon confirms third new DSLR incoming

Nikon has promised another new DSLR sometime in 2012, joining the freshly revealed D800 and D4, and while the company won't say exactly what is in the pipeline, its says its focus is improving the quality of existing models rather than adding new types of camera. The D800 and D700 will remain on sale alongside each other, general manager for marketing Nobuaki Sasagaki told Amateur Photographer, though a new Nikon is expected to make its debut later in the year. Demand for Nikon's D800 36-megapixel DSLR has apparently outstripped initial supply, with online retailers no longer accepting pre-orders for the much-anticipated FX-format camera. Sales of the D800 and its D800E low-pass filter-free sibling began shortly after the DSLR's announcement on Monday, ahead of their release in March and April respectively; now, though, pre-ordering has been frozen. Nikon has partnered with photographer Sandro Miller to whet would-be D800 buyers' appetites, putting the 36-megapixel camera through its Full HD 1080p paces. Nikon has confirmed pricing and availability for the new Nikon D800 DSLR, as well as revealing its D800E sibling that dumps the low-pass filter for higher-resolution shots. The D800 has a 36.3-megapixel sensor and Nikon's new EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, and will present an interesting alternative to the D700 being slightly lighter - though in some dimensions larger - but targeting more of a video-shooting, studio or landscape style of image capture. This week Nikon is bringing their newest DSLR to the market, the Nikon D800 being a major update over their previous installment to this series, the Nikon 700. This D800 camera is one made for professionals needing only the highest resolution, it having its manufacturer’s own largest full-frame sensor at 32 Megapixels strong. This camera does not have the same speed or low-light capabilities as the Nikon D4, that camera also just having a 16.2 MP sensor, it positioned instead to compete with the Canon 5D Mark II as well as the older Nikon D3x instead. UPDATE: As it turns out, the final release info from Nikon has the D800 with 36.3 MP and the pricing and release date has been revealed as well!

Said to be smaller and lighter than the Nikon D700, despite offering three times the sensor resolution and a bigger display, the D800 should also deliver better video quality than the D3s according to Nikon Rumors‘ sources, offering capture options at up to 1080p/30/25/24.

Nikon DSLR teaser campaign: new camera on March 8th?

It's been a while since we've had a good digital camera teaser campaign, and so we're glad to see Nikon apparently jumping in to deliver just that.  Various French camera sites are reporting receiving glossy cards through the post, with a number on one side and some French text ("I am..." and "I am fun" so far) on the reverse; there's no mention of Nikon, but the colors match the company's color-scheme and the recipients are believed to be all Nikon users.
