Google said close to $1bn SpaceX investment

Google is reportedly near to splashing a considerable amount of cash on SpaceX, Elon Musk's ambitious space exploration company, as part of a funding round that would value the company at more than $10bn. SpaceX has already begun running unmanned resupply missions to the International Space Station, and is currently testing reusable rocket technology that could potentially slash the cost of putting people, satellites, and other cargo into orbit, or even further beyond, such as a manned mission to Mars that Musk continues to promise. According to insiders, with Google's own space plans stumbling, the next best thing is a slice of SpaceX.

Tesla’s Nevada Gigafactory to cost $5 billion

Tesla’s Nevada Gigafactory to cost $5 billion

Gigafactories are crucial to the future of Tesla, even more than awesome cars and SUVs like the Model X. The delicate mix of car production and battery manufacturing will help Tesla roll cars off the line like never before, and if history is any indication — they’ll sell them all. How much will a ‘Gigafactory’ cost, though? What does it take to build one? Building permits give us those details, and shows just how big Tesla is betting on themselves as well as our desire to have an all-electric car.

SpaceX fails in ambitious rocket re-use test

SpaceX's attempt to land a reusable rocket on a floating recovery platform ended in failure this week, with outspoken founder Elon Musk admitting it was "close, but no cigar" for the technology. The ambitious mission was to see the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket maneuver its way back down after propelling Dragon 9 the initial step of the way to the International Space Station, dropping down to a pad in the Atlantic ocean. If successful, it would have been one of the most impressive acts of recycling around, with the first stage a whopping fourteen-stories tall.

VW Trained Parking turns e-Golf into its own valet

Turns out Elon Musk isn't the only one working on cars that can be dismissed to park themselves, with Volkswagen confirming it, too, is developing a semi-autonomous valet system for its cars. Dubbed VW Trained Parking, it builds on the company's existing Park Assist - which can take control of the steering wheel when reverse-parking or existing a parallel parking space, leaving the driver to handle the pedals - by adding the ability to track and learn commonly-completed maneuvers like parking outside your home, and then replicate them later on.

Tesla “solid metal snake” robo-charger in works

Tesla is working on a robotic charging system which will automatically plug in its electric cars like the Model S, described by CEO Elon Musk as "a solid metal snake." The intelligent charger would presumably be positioned as a way to bypass one of the lingering frustrations around EVs, namely that drivers have to remember to plug them in. While Musk gave no timescale for the robo-charger's release, he did confirm that it would work not only with future models but all existing Tesla cars.
