Hyperloop Alpha: Elon Musks’ high-speed train begins its journey in detail

After a bit of a foot-in-mouth mention of a high-speed transit system between the two ends of the country earlier this year, Elon Musk is today ready to bring a bit more heat to the very real possibility of this Hyperloop system. In a release made through Tesla Motors, Musk suggests that this next-generation system must be faster and cheaper to operate than either our current airplane system or driving a car. It must be, he suggested, far better than any other mode of transport for the journey it's capable of making - a fifth mode of transport.

Tesla’s Musk won’t build Hyperloop himself

Tesla’s Musk won’t build Hyperloop himself

Tesla's Elon Musk has no plans to build his controversial Hyperloop transportation system, which promised New York to LA travel in just 45 minutes, instead seeing the proposed high-speed project as an "open source" design he hopes others will pick up. Musk made headlines last month when he teased details of the Hyperloop - described as "a cross between a Concorde, a rail gun, and an air hockey table" - but, asked whether Tesla investors could expect a return on the system during the company's financial results call yesterday, admitted that he is too busy with the electric car company and SpaceX to build it himself.

Tesla battery-swap demo this week confirms Elon Musk

Tesla will show off its battery-swap system in a live demonstration this week, founder Elon Musk has revealed, as the electric car company experiments with alternative ways to power its vehicles. The demo will be done live, Musk confirmed, at the company's Hawthorne design studio. Given the recent failure of Better Place, however, all eyes will be on Tesla to see if it can deliver on replaceable batteries in a cost-effective way.

Tesla’s Elon Musk says SuperCharging network will be tripled

Tesla’s Elon Musk says SuperCharging network will be tripled

With a gasoline-powered car, refueling is as simple as pulling into a gas station and waiting a few minutes for the gas take to be refilled. Things are a bit trickier with electric vehicles, however, which require charging stations rather than gas stations. Tesla has been rolling out it SuperCharger network over many months, having added six in California back in October, for example. At tonight's D11 conference, Musk made an announcement early: Tesla's SuperCharger network will be tripled.

Elon Musk: Cheaper Tesla vehicles could be here in three to five years

Elon Musk is talking about all things Tesla at the D11 conference, and one particular area is on when consumers will see cheaper vehicles. As we reported yesterday, Musk wants to build a lower-cost all-electric car, getting them into the hands of more drivers to help combat climate change, among other reasons, something he has spoken about passionately in the past. When asked when we can expect a $30,000 Tesla vehicle, Musk replied: "Probably 3 to 5 years."

Elon Musk and David Sacks abandon Zuckerberg’s lobbying group FWD.Us

Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook fame launched a lobbying group called FWD.Us, which purports to be for immigration reform and has more than a few big names associated with it, including Microsoft's Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates, who joined a couple weeks after its unveiling. Among those big-name supporters was Elon Musk of Tesla and David Sacks of Yammer, both of whom have abandoned the group, according to sources who are said to be familiar with the matter.
