MSI Windbox: VESA-mounted fanless nettop

MSI have announced their rival to the ASUS Eee Box, the predictably named MSI Windbox.  A 300 x 240 x 65mm slab, the fanless Windbox contains a 1.6GHz N270 Intel Atom processor, 1GB or 2GB of RAM, either 160GB or 250GB hard-drive, WiFi b/g and gigabit ethernet.  While MSI demonstrated it with a desk-stand, it's actually intended to be fixed to the VESA mount on the back of a flat-panel monitor.

MSI Wind Neton all-in-one nettops: touchscreen & Blu-ray options, coming Q1 2009

The ASUS Eee Top won't have the all-in-one nettop field to itself for much longer: MSI are planning some rival integrated nettops of their own, in the shape of the new MSI Wind Neton range just unveiled in China.  The Neton M22, M19 and M16 have a 22-inch, 18.5-inch and 15.6-inch displays respectively, and are all based on either the single or dual-core Intel Atom CPU.  All have a touchscreen option and the M22 - which has a 1920 x 1080 resolution display - can be specified with a Blu-ray drive.

One of the more topical claims from Microsoft during the PDC was that Windows 7 would have no problems running on lower-spec hardware such as netbooks.  Of course, there's nothing like a challenge to get geeks motivated, so we're starting to see the first installs of the upcoming OS on today's budget ultraportable hardware.  Laptop Mag picked the ASUS Eee PC 1000H, while DavGerm4 used his MSI Wind (you can see the video after the cut; via jkkmobile); both are tentatively positive about the experience.
