MSI Wind U120: 3.5G WWAN, ThinkPad styling & holiday launch

The MSI Wind U120 will target business customers, with a ThinkPad-inspired design, 10-inch display, 120GB hard-drive (with SSDs following), 1GB of RAM and 3.5G WWAN connectivity, and hit retail by November or December priced under $600.  That's the latest word from MSI Director of US Sales Andy Tung, who has been discussing the company's netbook plans after the success of the original MSI Wind U100.  He's revealed that the U120 will sit alongside, not replace, the existing U100, which itself will see a WiFi b/g/n and 160GB hard-drive update this month.

MSI Wind U90 reviewed: Linux let-down

MSI Wind U90 reviewed: Linux let-down

For a while, MSI's original Wind netbook seemed set to conquer all the other netbooks.  With a relatively low price, sturdy build quality and, frankly, the fact that it wasn't one of ASUS' interminable Eee PCs, buyers flocked to the 10-inch budget ultraportable.  Even battery shortages couldn't dampen the enthusiasm.  You might think the smaller 8.9-inch Wind U90 would be more of the same, but if Laptop Mag are to be believed the golden halo may have slipped a little.

MSI Wind U120 and U91 in development: HSDPA, dual-core & more RAM

MSI Wind U120 and U91 in development: HSDPA, dual-core & more RAM

MSI's Wind netbook was the parallel success to ASUS' Eee, with the former being a single offering while the latter attempted to cater for every slight difference with dozens of models.  Now MSI are planning their next generation netbooks, with two new versions in mind: a replacement to the existing 10-inch U100, called the U120, and a new 8.9-inch U91.  Under the hood, despite the best efforts of VIA with their Nano CPU, it looks as though Intel's dual-core Atom 330 will be doing duty, with maximum RAM increased to 2GB.

MSI Wind netbook running Apple OS X Leopard

How does a compact "Travel MacBook" sound?  With a little effort, some transplant surgery and moderate outlay, you could DIY just that: The Gadgeteer's Julie has just switched software on her MSI Wind netbook, and rather than pick between the usual choices of Windows XP or a Linux distro, she's installed Apple's OS X.

MSI Wind suffers price hike as costs climb

MSI Wind suffers price hike as costs climb

Disappointing rumblings from MSI, as the price of their Wind netbook climbs uncomfortably.  Facing what the company describes as an increase in both battery and material costs, the MSRP has now been pushed up to $499.99 with the 3-cell battery and $549.99 with the 6-cell battery.  Previously the company had pledged to reduce the 3-cell version to $479.99 while the 6-cell, expected in September, would carry the original $499.99 tag.  However that doesn't mean that retailers are taking the MSRP at face value.

MSI Wind arrives in Italy, unboxed

From one MSI Wind story to another, and despite the apparent delays in shipping, Diego from Technophone has managed to acquire one of the 10-inch notebooks and has already put up his unboxing gallery.  US customers may be facing up to five weeks wait for the Wind, but someone in Italy has obviously got access to them.

MSI Wind rebadged as Advent 4211 and on sale in UK now

Hang on, so US customers will be waiting a whole 3-5 weeks to get their hands on MSI's Wind budget ultraportable, courtesy of Amazon, while in the UK a rebadged version of the notebook is available today?  Somewhat conclusive proof that MSI really need to re-examine their supply-chain, UK retailer PC World is shipping its version of the Wind - called the Advent 4211 - already.
