Motorola XOOM WiFi-only in April; 800k shipments expected Q1

Motorola is expecting strong sales of its XOOM tablet, and has ordered as many as 800,000 units for Q1 2011 alone, according to the latest supply chain leaks. According to DigiTimes, four color options make up the 700,000 to 800,000 unit orders Motorola has placed, with suppliers expecting total orders this quarter to near one million. Meanwhile, the WiFi-only version of the XOOM is now expected to arrive in April.

It takes a brave company - some might cruelly say foolish - to launch a touchscreen-centric smartphone on the same day that the next-gen iPhone is expected to debut, but Motorola are obviously confident enough in the new Motorola XT720 that they're willing to take on Cupertino. Based on the MOTOROI handset that launched a few months back in Korea, the XT720 could be summed up as a Motorola DROID without the QWERTY keyboard (and just 10.9mm thick as a result), though there's also an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with Xenon flash to sweeten the deal.

Honestly, you sit around waiting for one Motorola tablet and a few drop into your lap at once. SlashGear reader Dion flagged up three new Motorola devices seemingly headed for the Chinese market, including one which looks to be the touchscreen handset formerly known as the Sholes: the Motorola XT701, the MT710 and finally the XT800. All three run Android and have sizeable 3.7-inch 854 x 480 displays like the Motorola DROID.
