Is Google burning a hole in its Motorola firewall?

, Apr 11th 2012 Discuss [0]

Google will make a "substantial investment" in Motorola Mobility once acquisition of the smartphone and tablet company is complete, insiders reveal, with a goal of building "truly innovative devices" and turning around its fortunes. The hands-on approach, tipped to the WSJ by sources close to Google, would seemingly differ significantly from the so-called "firewall" between the Android developer and Motorola which platform chief Andy Rubin has insisted will be in place. Android 4.0 ICS updates detailed for Verizon

, Mar 6th 2012 Discuss [0]

Nearly the entire line of Android devices have been listed in one massive post made by Verizon this week detailing which of them will and which of them will not get an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. For those of you wondering why it's Verizon, the carrier, and not the manufacturers of the devices themselves that are announcing this, it's simply because it's Verizon who has to work with the manufacturer to get the update pushed to the devices because each of these devices has a special Verizon-branded build inside them - that meaning apps for the most part - and no manufacturer is free from such a bond. Have a peek if your Verizon-branded device is amongst the lucky to be getting an Ice Cream Sandwich update soon. Read The Full Story

Microsoft files antitrust complaint against Motorola

, Feb 22nd 2012 Discuss [0]

Microsoft has joined Apple in filing an antitrust complaint against Motorola Mobility, claiming the company is trying to use online video standards patents as a weapon, and that new owner Google is doing nothing to stop it. According to Microsoft’s Deputy General Counsel, Dave Heiner, Motorola is demanding the company yank Windows PCs, Xbox 360 consoles and more from store shelves in North America and Europe, “or else remove their standards-based ability to play video and connect wirelessly.” That, Heiner argues, is antitrust behavior, and he shows Microsoft’s sums to prove it: Motorola apparently wants 1,125x the rate in royalty payments as other patent holders.

If you've got a Motorola device that you plan on keeping for the next couple of years and plan to get it updated to the newest version of Android any time soon, you're may be in for a world of hurt. Though we're not always agreed on if the newest version of a software in the mobile realm is always the best, and certainly all versions of Android are well functioning enough to be satisfied for some people, the list of devices Motorola currently has released and plans to update to Android 4.0 is surprisingly small. Should you have one of the smartphones that've been released by Motorola in the past couple of months - you'll probably want to get a paper bag to yell into. Read The Full Story

Motorola's Ice Cream Sandwich updates for existing devices won't reach US phones and tablets until sometime in Q3 2012, the company has confirmed, with Android 4.0 still mired in planning and evaluation for most eligible models. The DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX, DROID 4, BIONIC, XYBOARD 8.2 and 10.1, and XOOM WiFI + 3G/4G are all in line for Ice Cream Sandwich, but there's likely to be plenty of competition running Android 4.0 natively by the time the new software arrives.
