Android 4.4 KitKat and Nexus 5 appear in photos in Italy

This week someone all the way over in Italy appears to have gotten their hands on a Nexus 5 running no less than Android 4.4 KitKat. This build seems to be final or certainly near-final with a collection of features we've either only heard rumors of or have never seen before. Working with build KRS92B and Kernel 3.4.0, this Nexus 5 appears to be nearly ready for showtime - and not all that unlike the Moto X.

Samsung Galaxy fingerprint scanner up next: Note 3 nearly supplied

Samsung Galaxy fingerprint scanner up next: Note 3 nearly supplied

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 works with a variety of next-generation abilities, most of them based in its unique S Pen technology - one thing it doesn't have (but almost did) is a fingerprint scanner. Currently rolling out with the iPhone 5s with Touch ID and quite likely appearing on the HTC One Max, the fingerprint scanner entry point for smartphones appears to be rising as a "must have" feature for smartphones in general. According to an anonymous "industry official" speaking with the ETNews network in Korea, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was initially supposed to be part of this first wave (first modern wave, that is,) of print-scanning smartphones.

VIEVU teams with Motorola Solutions for new body-worn video cameras

The oncoming collection of BWV (body worn video) cameras coming from VIEVU may remind you of Narrative Clip - aka the cameras formerly known as Memoto. But here as the VIEVU team announces a partnership with Motorola Solutions, they push forth a small form-factor, highly secure camera made for security organizations, police, and law enforcement in general. In other words - if you get your hands on one of these, you'll either have purchased on direct from VIEVU or you'll have copped one off a cop.

Motorola Moto DVX set for sub-Nexus price and low-end specs

There's a device out there in the wild called the Motorola Moto DVX, and it's being prepared by the folks at Motorola to do battle with the likes of the least expensive phones on the market. This device looks and feels rather similar to the Moto X, but it wont be delivered with the same near-high-end specifications. Instead it'll be cut down to the bare minimum, delivered with the ability to take on the Motorola quality and abilities delivered with the Moto X with modifications made to cut the price right out from under it.

AT&T: Moto X camera update today, HTC One Android 4.3 next week

Two flagship Android phones on AT&T are in line for some software attention, beginning with the carrier pushing out the camera and touchless controls update to the Moto X from today. The firmware, which was released to T-Mobile Moto X owners back in September, improves auto-white balance and color accuracy, as well as exposure particularly in low-light situations. Meanwhile, there's a much-anticipated update to the HTC One on AT&T's horizon, too.

Android Touch ID alternative in early 2014 promises FIDO Alliance

Android Touch ID alternative in early 2014 promises FIDO Alliance

iPhone 5s-style fingerprint security could show up broadly on Android phones within six months, a consortium led by Google, PayPal and others claims, promising an open standard rather than Apple's locked-down Touch ID. Early attempts at Android biometrics on the Motorola ATRIX and others proved clunky, but a new generation of fingerprint scanning with "very low friction" to success is fast approaching, Michael Barrett of the FIDO Alliance told USA Today.

Motorola tablet up next from Verizon: DROID all but confirmed

With the DROID Ultra and the DROID Maxx out in stores now aside the DROID Mini, there's not much else Motorola can do in the smartphone space - save the Moto X, of course. But what about tablets? This week the folks at Droid Landing have all but confirmed their intent to release a Motorola DROID tablet in the wake of the DROID smartphone series for 2013 - now it's just a matter of seeing how much of the Motorola hands-free action will be able to use.

Moto X Developer Editions released as Motorola courts coders

Moto X Developer Editions released as Motorola courts coders

Motorola has begun selling the Moto X Developer Edition, its version of the Moto X with an unlocked bootloader that allows Android coders to flirt with different OS versions. Up for sale in Verizon form, with an AT&T/T-Mobile USA version "coming soon", the $649.99 handset obviously lacks a carrier subsidy but also sacrifices a warranty if you want to actually use it for development purposes.

DROID Ultra Limited Edition official, complete with red racing stripe

DROID Ultra Limited Edition official, complete with red racing stripe

As we saw in a very early rendering of the newest DROID family devices, there's a Limited Edition of the DROID Ultra out there in the wild. This device has appeared for the first time in "real life", as it were, this week on eBay, some collectors - or employees, more than likely - have taken their units to the auction site to earn a quick buck while they keep to whatever devices they'd rather carry in their pocket. We must assume this means they've all decided to work with a custom-built Moto X, of course.

Motorola tablet may return with Moto X customizations

Motorola tablet may return with Moto X customizations

So you say you're in the market for a new tablet, but you've found the customizations available with the Motorola Moto X smartphone to be the bees knees? You may be in luck - there's a tip from a very, very brief set of words exchanged between Engadget and Dennis Woodside this week that suggests we may be seeing a new Motorola product in the near future with features mimicking those of the Moto X. While the wording on this very brief interlude in a conversation could mean many things, it's time we went down a list of possible - and probable - next-generation Motorola devices.
