Sony UX490 UMPC hugely modded: CPU switched, 3G injected, quad-OS

We've covered a few modded Sony VAIO UX-series UMPCs over the years, but it's rare to see all the headline tweaks combined into one machine.  Happily one member of the Micro PC Talk forums has done just that, taking a humble 2007 UX490 and not only switching out its SSD, WiFi and other basic components, but completely replacing the standard CPU (which is soldered into place) for a faster version.

Sony Tablet S Review

Sony Tablet S Review

It's been some time since Sony had a tablet on the market. Times have changed since the VAIO UX's day, though, and where once tablets were niche devices, now they're making headway into our living rooms. The Sony Tablet S is the first model of the company's new strategy, packing Android Honeycomb into a hardware design that's a little more interesting than many rivals have managed. Sony VAIO UX490 UMPC unboxed

Ah, the good old unboxing.  It's the modern-day equivalent of taking your knitting to the local hanging, what with all the vicarious pleasure on offer.  Latest to strip off its cardboard sheath and say "hello world!" is the VAIO UX490N/C UMPC, the update to Sony's screen-sliding miniature masterpiece, with new owner Berto showing off the retail packaging and the device itself (complete with extended battery).

Sony will be releasing their latest addition to their VAIO UX line here in the US soon. The updates include Vista Business and a new Intel Core 2 Solo processor.

Other than that you will be hit with 48GB of SSD storage, which is probably where most of the $2500 price tag comes from, but should make the battery life better than HDD based models. The new processor operates at 1.2GHz which if I recollect right means you also get a bit of a speed boost.

Well we knew they were coming in general, and now we know that the latest Sony UMPC - the VGN-UX490N - will be landing in the US complete with a 1.2GHz Core 2 Solo processor and 48GB SSD drive.  Support materials have already appeared on Sony's site, in advance of an official announcement, as well as marketing specifications that hold a worrying tidbit about how much RAM the UMPC can support.

Sony upgrade UX-series UMPC with 64bit CPU and 64GB SSD

Sony's historically cavalier attitude towards product naming - sometimes dozens of different names for different locations and slight hardware changes - and tendency to suddenly discontinue products has left fans nervous of changes in the company's catalogue; when the UX-series UMPC disappeared earlier this month there was as much talk of the project being canned as there was speculation around potential upgrades.  Thankfully they've gone with the latter rather than the former: welcome to the ultra-mobile fold the UX72, UX92S and UX92NS.
