Microsoft Surface RT tablet orders cut in half says supply chain source

Microsoft Surface RT tablet orders cut in half says supply chain source

I always think of the tablet market as having two basic segments. You have your high-end segment that Apple owns with its iPad, and then we have the lower end segment where tablet such as the Amazon Fire HD and hordes of Android-powered tablets play. I've always thought that the companies trying to break into that high-end tablet market, such as Microsoft, are doing things wrong, especially when it comes to pricing.

HP PC chief: “Kludgey” Microsoft Surface is “hardly competition”

HP's PC chief has dismissed Microsoft's Surface tablet as "slow and a little kludgey" and blamed the tech press for over-hyping what he would "hardly call ... competition" to HP's own products. "Holistically, the press has made a bigger deal out of Surface than what the world has chosen to believe" Todd Bradley told CITEworld, going on to say that HP's initial focus with Windows tablets is the enterprise, with consumer-centric models not expected until 2013.

Microsoft Surface RT teardown shows giant retail profit margin

Microsoft Surface RT teardown shows giant retail profit margin

The folks that see how inexpensive an item is to produce and feel that the manufacturer should have little to no profit over this cost are certainly not going to enjoy what they're hearing from IHS iSuppli about Microsoft today, that's for sure. With a a Bill of Materials (BOM) cost of $271 USD and a $13 USD manufacturing cost, the total cost of the Microsoft Surface RT with minimum 32GB NAND flash memory becomes $248 in all, this placing it well below retail price at $599. IHS iSuppli note that compared to the low-end iPad (that being the iPad 2 in this case), the Surface RT generates a greater profit margin in percentage terms and on a per-unit basis as well.

Microsoft Surface pre-orders delayed in UK, apologetic coupon sent instead

This week the folks at Microsoft have made one gigantically undeniable effort to let the world know they're ready for Windows 8 to hit the public, but in the UK, they've hit a bit of a snag. It would appear that those early adopters hoping to get a Microsoft Surface this week after having pre-ordered one when they were placed on sale are now receiving a notice. This notice says that Microsoft is sorry that conflicting messages had been sent through various portals giving different odd delivery dates, be they later or earlier than originally stated - as it turns out, the original date range stands.

I cancelled my Microsoft Surface order

I cancelled my Microsoft Surface order

I um'd and ah'd and hovered over the purchase button for a day or two, but eventually I clicked: I preordered Microsoft's Surface. Jumping onto new hardware always makes you consider exactly how you're going to integrate it into your life, but my intentions this time around were pretty clear. I liked the cut of Microsoft's jib: that its new version of Windows (and the flagship hardware to run it on) was made not only for sitting back and browsing through content, but for actual, proper content creation. I had visions of leaving my MacBook Pro at home and slipping a slender Surface into my bag instead. And then, with shipping just around the corner, I cancelled the order.
