Microsoft confuses on Windows 10 phone upgrades

Microsoft confuses on Windows 10 phone upgrades

First came the good news: Windows 10 would be a free upgrade; now comes the small print, that not everybody is going to be eligible. After Microsoft surprised Windows fans earlier this week with the promise that not only would those running Windows 8 get an upgrade to the latest OS, but those on Windows 7 too, some of the goodwill sheen has been rubbed off after first Windows RT users and now some Lumia Windows Phone owners have been left uncertain whether they'll ever get Windows 10 on their devices.

Microsoft HoloLens will take NASA scientists to Mars — virtually

Microsoft HoloLens will take NASA scientists to Mars — virtually

Microsoft’s HoloLens is a pretty neat concept, and already showing a lot of promise. Via a headset and virtual environment, we’d be able to do all kinds of things like assemble or design something to be 3D printed, and it certainly has a lot of gaming angles. As far as virtual environments go, there might be no cooler one than mars, and that’s what NASA and Microsoft have in mind. Using HoloLens, NASA wants to let Earth-bound scientists work in space — virtually.

Surface Hub puts Windows 10 on 84″ 4K digital whiteboard

Microsoft has revealed its latest Windows 10 form-factor, the Surface Hub, a huge 84-inch screen intended to replace the traditional whiteboard with a digital alternative. The 84-inch, 4K resolution touchscreen looks at first glance like a simple LCD display, but in fact it has onboard processing and support for both finger-touch and a digital stylus. Microsoft believes it's the future of business communication and collaboration, with baked-in sharing and streaming support too.

Surface Pro update brings improved hardware behavior

Surface Pro update brings improved hardware behavior

Microsoft has just released a rather substantial update to its Surface Pro line, spanning all generations of the Windows 8 toting tablet hybrids. While a good number of the updates bring improvements across the board, the brunt of the focus is lavished on the graphics and networking hardware of the Surface Pros in an attempt to improve the overall experience of the tablets and, consequently, the appeal of the devices to a still unbelieving market.

Windows 10 dark theme, Spartan browser (allegedly) surface in screenshots

Microsoft introduced Windows 10 back in September 2014, and though we won't be seeing it arrive until the end of this year, the company has dropped some details about it. Never one to be content, the Internet has fished around and procured its own details, usually in the form of rumors and speculation, and that trend holds true now that we're into the new year. A couple of screenshots have surfaced of what are said to be Windows 10's dark theme, as well as its rumored and codenamed Spartan browser.

Lumia RM-1052 prototype sighted, could be the McLaren

Lumia RM-1052 prototype sighted, could be the McLaren

Microsoft might have closed the last chapter of Nokia's Lumia book, but the story is far from over, especially with many unanswered questions left hanging. One of those pertain to the supposed Lumia 1020 successor, a smartphone codenamed "McLaren". Aside from continuing the 1020's photography lineage, this McLaren was supposed to also bear a "3D Touch" interface. However, it was rumored to have been axed mid year and vanished without a trace. That is, until this RM-1052 prototype surfaced in China, which could very well be that stillborn smartphone.

Surface Pro 3’s latest ad takes jab at the MacBook Air

Surface Pro 3’s latest ad takes jab at the MacBook Air

Microsoft rolled out its latest ad for the Surface Pro 3 over the weekend, and in it is the same tired theme we've seen before: comparison with an Apple product, in this case a MacBook Air. It's short and sweet at 30 seconds, and focuses on the features offered by the Surface Pro 3 ("...it has got a USB!") while a MacBook Air sits next to it relatively ignored. Festive imagery is sprinkled throughout, no doubt encouraging viewers to grab one for the holiday season.

Surface Pro 3 used as iPad stands by CNN commentators

Surface Pro 3 used as iPad stands by CNN commentators

Back in September, Microsoft's marketing efforts for the Surface Pro 3 didn't go as expected when sports announcers forgot what it was called, instead referring to them as iPads and "iPad-like tools". A similar situation unfolded on CNN during the live election coverage this week, where the commentators were seen decked out with snazzy Surface Pro 3 units. Nothing seemed amiss...at first. As the broadcast wore on, however, it became apparent that the Surfaces weren't being used in the intended manner.

Venue 11 Pro 7000 is Dell’s new Surface Pro 3 double

Venue 11 Pro 7000 is Dell’s new Surface Pro 3 double

Dell has dragged its Venue 11 Pro tablet back into the labs and given it a makeover, slimming down and speeding up the Windows 8.1 slate to better compete with Microsoft's own Surface Pro 3. The new Venue 11 Pro 7000 now looks distinctly similar to the Surface Pro 3, in fact, and Dell has seemingly taken some inspiration from there when it comes to accessories and peripherals, too, with a mobile keyboard and an active stylus both on offer. That's not to say the new Dell isn't interesting in its own right, however.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro pit against Macbook Air in new Microsoft ad

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro pit against Macbook Air in new Microsoft ad

Lenovo's Yoga 3 Pro notebook is thin, it's transformable, and it would appear to be Microsoft's newest favored son as it does battle with the MacBook Air in Microsoft's newest TV ad spot. This device is thinner than the MacBook Air. It's able to bend backwards far enough to turn itself into a tablet. It's got a touchscreen. It's also very similar looking to the MacBook Air from afar - but they really couldn't be more difference, when it comes down to it.

Microsoft Band wearable is official and available now

Microsoft Band wearable is official and available now

Microsoft's hotly anticipated wearable had a rocky unveiling today, popping up first via its mobile apps rather than in anything official. The company has wasted little time, however, and has officially taken the wraps off its fitness wearable: the Microsoft Band. Named such for its wristband design, no doubt, the Band is a fitness tracker with an edge, able to both keep tabs on your activities and your digital life. As the apps indicated earlier this evening, the wearable works alongside the Microsoft Health platform and in conjunction with a handful of different partners.
