Microsoft Surface SUR40 multitouch table slims bulk & price [Video]

Microsoft has spilled pricing details on its new second-gen Surface SUR40 multitouch table, launched the company's CES 2011 keynote yesterday, and slimming down the original surface into a slick 4-inch thick slab. The new SUR40 Surface 2.0 - which is manufactured by Samsung, and has a Full HD 1080p 40-inch display covered with a sheet of toughened Gorilla Glass - will be priced at $7,600 rather than the original Surface's $12k+ sticker.

Ideum MT2 Multitouch Table beats Microsoft Surface in size & resolution

Exhibit and media design firm Ideum have cocked a snook at Microsoft with the launch of their MT2 Table, a multitouch-table which, at 50-inches running at 1280 x 720, is both larger and higher resolution than Microsoft's Surface.  The MT2 Table, which can respond to multiple points of contact across the display and recognize gestures, is intended for museum use, and as such has an aircraft-grade aluminum frame and thick tempered glass top.  Underneath there's a 2100 ANSI projector with a 2000:1 contrast ratio.

Microsoft SecondLight Surface adds dual-display to multitouch table

Microsoft SecondLight Surface adds dual-display to multitouch table

Despite only just releasing the SDK for their multitouch Surface table, Microsoft have already updated the system with a second layer of projection functionality.  As well as the current projected display, the new SecondLight Surface is capable of throwing a second image onto any translucent material - for instance a piece of paper - held above the table.  Developed by the company's Cambridge, UK research arm, SecondLight can be used to display, say, an image of a car on the table-top together with a moveable cutaway schematic on a handheld screen held above.

DIY Multitouch table project offers low-cost alternative to Microsoft Surface

Eyebeam are looking to bring DIY multitouch to the masses with their open-source Cubit project.  Promising a touchscreen table in the style of Microsoft's Surface, only with a far smaller $500-1,000 build cost, Eyebeam have made the hardware schematics and software source code available for anyone to download.  They also sell a kit that includes the table, frosted surface and most of the electronics, with builders only needing to supply the computer, a simple projector and a webcam.

Surface Pro 3 Review

Surface Pro 3 Review

The Surface Pro 3 is something special. Microsoft has refused to give up on its concept of one device that’s both a tablet and ultrabook, and its ramped up the trash-talk, too, calling out the MacBook Air and iPad by name when it launched the third-generation Windows 8.1 machine. Thing is, this may not just be hot air: bigger but lighter, faster but slimmer, the Surface Pro 3 might well be the hybrid Microsoft has been promising all this time. More importantly, it could well convince me - as an unabashed Mac and iPad user - that the Surface Pro 3 is now competitive. Read on for my full review.

Microsoft Surface Pro available now in the US and Canada

Right on schedule, Microsoft's Surface Pro is now available to purchase for prospective buyers in the US and Canada.
