Not long ago the hosting company based in Virginia where Megaupload stored the 25 PB of data customers have uploaded sought relief from the courts. While Megaupload and its founder Kim Dotcom had been battling in court, the hosting company claims it is spending $9000 a day to retain the massive amount of data. In an interview two weeks ago, Kim Dotcom revealed to Torrentfreak that a number of Megaupload’s users were from the US government. In new emails, Dotcom has given exact details as to which governmental bodies were using the service, as well as upload statistics. New Zealand courts have now granted Dotcom and his family $60,000 a month to cover living expenses. The Motion Picture Association of America wants Megaupload's hosting service to retain a whopping 25 PB of customer data that is stored on its servers. It's allegedly costing the host, Carpathia based in Virginia, about $9000 each day to store the massive amount of user data. The MPAA in some cases isn't simply trying to shut the websites down, it is going after owners and administrators of the websites as evidenced by the legal trouble Megaupload and its owners are going through. Controversial MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom may be able to claim back thousands of dollars-worth of luxury cars, property and funds, after a "procedural error" by the New Zealand police meant their seizure was illegal. The court order has "no legal effect" and is "null and void" Justice Judith Potter ruled on Friday last week, the NZ Herald reports, after police commissioner Peter Marshall applied for the "incorrect order" and then subsequently attempted to switch it over.
