iOS 5 slams door on iPhone firmware downgrades

, Jun 27th 2011 Discuss [8]

Apple is reportedly preparing to ramp up the preventative measures it uses to prevent iOS device owners from restoring older firmware versions, a system often used as part of jailbreak and/or unlocking hacks. As of iOS 5, the iPhone Dev Team reports, Apple will be stepping up the authentication process on the "APTicket" which deems whether a particular firmware version can be installed on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch or not. Even those owners who have "saved their blobs" - aka keeping a record of SHSH details for each firmware version - so that they can backtrack to earlier, more hack-friendly iterations of iOS will be affected. The photos are renderings that show what the theater that is under construction right now will look like. Read The Full Story

, Jun 10th 2011 Discuss [0]

The iPhone Dev Team has released its tethered jailbreak for devices running iOS 5, as demonstrated earlier this week. The hack - which allows unofficial software to be run on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch when running the new version of iOS - uses the original limera1n bootrom exploit; still, the Dev Team reckons this particular release really isn't for everyone. A video showing iTunes restoring an iPad to pre-jailbreak iOS firmware 3.2.2 has been uploaded by iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd, suggesting that the next level in hacking for the Apple slate is fast approaching.  The technique apparently uses Geohot's limera1n exploit cooked into a new version of the Dev Team's PwnageTool; the next step, according to the hackers, is taking on the new Apple TV. Geohot’s Limera1n Jailbreaking Utility Now Available for Mac

, Oct 14th 2010 Discuss [4]

It's been said in the past that the jailbreaking community for iDevices never sleeps. And the community certainly has been busy this last week, especially with the release of Geohot's latest jailbreaking utility, Limera1n. The release of Limera1n caused a lot of waves throughout the community, as well as all those people out there who take advantage of jailbreaking (or more) their iDevice. But, unfortunately, Limera1n was only launched on PCs, which occured on 10/10/2010. Four days later, that's finally changed. Read The Full Story

Greenpois0n Jailbreak tool gets Limera1n update

, Oct 12th 2010 Discuss [12]

The iPhone/iOS hacking community has been busy over the past few days, dealing with a newly released exploit - Limera1n - by notorious modder Geohot that prompted the iPhone Dev Team to rethink their own strategy and not waste "a perfectly good bootrom hole" of their own.  It seems that work has come to fruition, too, with a new version of their Greenpois0n jailbreaking tool. iPhone 4 jailbreak demo by Geohot won’t see release

, Jul 12th 2010 Discuss [0]

iPhone (and PS3) hacker Geohot has been showing off his freshly jailbroken iPhone 4, but he also apparently has no plans on releasing it.  So far the bulk of the jailbreak work has been done by the iPhone Dev Team; Geohot - or George Hotz as he goes in real life - says his reasoning for not releasing the jailbreak isn't technical but motivational, since he believes users will then simply move on to demanding the next step in the unlock chain.
