IFA 2012: Note II, 4K TV, Windows wobbles and more

IFA 2012: Note II, 4K TV, Windows wobbles and more

4K TV, Windows tableteering, segment straddling smartphones, and cross-company sniping: another year, another IFA. We've seen the show coalesce around a few key themes before, and 2012 proved no different, as manufacturers took a suck-it-and-see strategy to try to cash in on holiday hardware sales. As always, the specter of Apple loomed heavy, despite the Cupertino firm's resolute absence. Read on for the highlights of IFA 2012.

The great Windows tablet keyboard crapshoot

The great Windows tablet keyboard crapshoot

If each tech show has an unofficial theme, then IFA 2012's must be Windows 8 tablets. Microsoft's new OS - in both full 8 and pared-back RT forms - has shown up on touchscreen hardware from all of the main manufacturers, each trying slightly different combinations of size, specs and accessories in the hope of standing out from the crowd. Options are great, of course, but are there signs that Microsoft's tablet desperation is rubbing off on its OEMs?

Welcome to Thursday evening folks. We had a lot of news coming out of Germany for the second day of our IFA 2012 trip, so let's jump in. We have a ton of hands-on posts to get through, but first, be sure to have a look at our Dell IFA 2012 Wrap-Up for all of the details on what the company announced and what it let us see. Windows 8 makes manufacturers touchy at IFA 2012

Windows 8 makes manufacturers touchy at IFA 2012

This week in Berlin at IFA 2012 we're seeing a large amount of manufacturers bringing on touchscreens and convertible, transformable, or otherwise completely strange Windows 8 computers. There's everything from a flipping screen to a flat horizontal interface, and so many tablets that we don't know where to begin. One thing they've all got in common: they're attempting to make use of Windows 8's ability to work with interactive touchscreens and gestures galore.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 hands-on

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 hands-on

Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet 2 isn't new - the company announced it officially earlier this month - but we had our first time to get up close and personal with the Windows 8 business-focused slate at IFA. Unlike Lenovo's Android models, the ThinkPad Tablet 2 is Lenovo very much on form: it's clearly from the ThinkPad stable, for instance, and is filled with details that suggest the company was thinking about their business users first and foremost.

Windows 8 tablets are bad business

Windows 8 tablets are bad business

Microsoft's Surface Pro has company, with Lenovo revealing its own Windows 8 slate, the ThinkPad Tablet 2, targeting the all-important enterprise segment. Like the higher-spec Surface, Lenovo's new tablet has content-creation features like a digital pen and all the remote management your IT team demands; it also has the more flexible full version of Windows 8, rather than Windows RT. And, like Microsoft, Lenovo is playing pricing cards close to its chest. One thing is already becoming clear, however: Windows 8 may well struggle to compete in business markets.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: August 9th, 2012

This morning it's time for the leaks to come rolling in, starting with the Sony Xperia Tablet - all thin and new looking. Two "pre-human" species have been found in another awesome day in science that'll be bringing new understanding to us on the whole "where did we come from" question. There's still a bunch of Agent Orange over in Vietnam from the conflict they (and we) had about 40 years ago - now we're going to help get rid of it with super-heat.

Lenovo: Tablets will save Windows 8 but ultrabooks still need work

Lenovo: Tablets will save Windows 8 but ultrabooks still need work

Lenovo is counting on Windows 8 tablets and a more evolved ultrabook for the future of PCs, though the company isn't convinced that ultraportables are at a stage where they can sufficiently compete today. "The ultrabook is the right direction" ThinkPad business unit general manager Dilip Bhatia said of Intel's ultraportable push, "it's the start of the journey, so it's not the destination." However, Lenovo is upfront that it needs "to create something more" than the ThinkPad notebook as it stands if it wants to remain viable.
