Considering all the hub-bub that the Amazon Kindle, and Barnes and Noble nook (both versions) received yesterday, we were shocked that some of the other eReaders out there didn't follow suit. Apparently it took a day for the news to hit the competition, because today sees the announcement from Borders that, for the same price as the "nook Lite," you can pick up the Kobo variation, plus a little gift.

Kobo ereader Bluetooth flaw undermines wireless use

Kobo's $150 ereader isn't expected to arrive at Borders in the US until June 17th, so hopefully that will give the manufacturer a little time to finesse the firmware.  According to one thread over at MobileRead, the Kobo's much-touted Bluetooth connectivity - allowing for short-range, cable-free transfers of ebooks to the device - has a significant flaw in that it won't update its books list after wireless use.  Ironically, the only way at present to force an update is to plug in a USB cable and unplug it.

Kobo ereader hits Borders preorder for $150

Kobo and Borders have announced that the Kobo ereader is now available for preorder, and will begin shipping from June 17th 2010.  Priced at $149.99, the Kobo lacks WiFi or 3G but does at least come with Bluetooth, for wireless transfers of ebooks from your computer to the device; those ebooks, Borders hope, come from their own selection of over 1m titles, though you can also load up any DRM-free ePub or PDF content.

Is there room in the market still for e-paper ereaders? Kobo says yes, and has the consumer research to prove it and the new model, the Kobo Aura HD, it claims will fit the bill. A survey of 10,000 of the company's existing users found that 90-percent plan to buy a new, dedicated ereader sometime in the next twelve months, Kobo says; 36-percent apparently have both a tablet and an ereader, and 53-percent use their ereader every day. We caught up with Kobo to take a look.

Kobo unveils the limited edition Aura HD eReader

Kobo has just revealed its new, limited-edition E Ink Reader that will be available for pre-order beginning tomorrow for the price of $169.99. The eReader is dubbed the Kobo Aura HD, and it will be available in 3 colors: Ivory, Espresso, and Onyx (White, Brown, and Black). This new eReader is what Wayne White, the EVP and GM of Devices for Kobo, calls, "The Porsche of eReaders". He says that it pushes the boundaries of eReading, and is designed for those who are in the "driver's seat of their eReading adventures."
