Everyone Is Scared of Amazon – And They Should Be

, May 4th 2012 Discuss [0]

There was a time when some of the biggest electronics retailers in the world had issues with Amazon. They realized that the online retail giant was able to beat them on price, and with more and more people coming to its site, it had the ability to take them down.

The past is littered with companies that tried to go up against Amazon, including Circuit City, CompUSA, and others. Best Buy is now having some trouble competing against online giants like Amazon, and by the look of things, eventually, only mega retailers like Walmart, as well as small boutiques, might survive the online onslaught.

Apple, not Amazon, is Microsoft’s NOOK Motivation

, Apr 30th 2012 Discuss [0]

Barely was the e-ink dry on Microsoft and Barnes & Noble’s $300m NOOK agreement when pundits were questioning the wisdom of adding Amazon to the software company’s existing roster of big-name rivals. Microsoft is already under attack in mobile and computing, so the commentary went; throwing one of the biggest retailers around into the mixture was at best foolish and at worst evidence of Microsoft spreading itself thin when it needs to be extra lavish with its strokes. That analysis is wrong, though. Make no mistake: Apple, not Amazon, is in Microsoft’s sights today.

The Simplest Things Are Not The Cheapest

, Apr 22nd 2012 Discuss [0]

My parents bought my toddler a kid’s tablet as a Hanukkah gift. I had been checking out the VTech Innotab and Leap Frog Leapster tabs as options for him. They bought him the Innotab, with an accompanying, rugged digital camera built for kids. The Innotab is a tough little device, with rubber bumpers all around. It has a resistive touchscreen and a stylus that slots into the back. It comes with some basic programs, and you can download more apps from the company website. It’s almost easy enough, but having used it for a few months with my son, I’ve come to realize a fascinating change in the state of technology. The more you pay for a product, the simpler it becomes.
