Apple reportedly aiming for paid iTunes streaming — no free option

Apple reportedly aiming for paid iTunes streaming — no free option

Remember the Taylor Swift/Spotify slap-fight? She yanked her music because the streaming service wasn’t paying enough, and they retorted she was making a ton of cash. It drug on for a bit, but she was ultimately right — streaming doesn’t pay artists enough, especially when it’s free for consumers. In discussing their new iTunes music streaming option, Apple execs are reportedly telling record labels to “get behind a paywall”. As such, their new service is not believed to offer any type of free tier.

iTunes streaming service, new Apple TV reportedly delayed until WWDC

iTunes streaming service, new Apple TV reportedly delayed until WWDC

That Beats/iTunes streaming music service Apple is believed to be working on won’t be showing up Monday, a new report claims. The new service, which is widely expected to roll in a total iTunes streaming option, is being ‘delayed’ as Apple finalizes details. Instead, Apple will roll the service out in June alongside a new Apple TV platform, replete with slimmed-down hardware. Though Apple hasn’t yet announced WWDC’s dates, many are looking to the second week in June as a time for this event.

Apple says no more AOL log-ins for iTunes, App Store

If you’re still using an AOL email to log-in, we’re not sure if that’s impressive or sad. Though you may have been around since the early days of the Internet, times have definitely changed for the better. If you were using that email to log-in to iTunes, you’re going to have to change your ways. Apple has announced they’re pulling support for iTunes AOL log-ins, meaning you’ll have to use something else. The change also affects iBooks and the App Store.

Apple hiring for iTunes, could be for over-the-top streaming service

Apple hiring for iTunes, could be for over-the-top streaming service

While nothing is confirmed or known beyond some strong rumors, Apple’s streaming music service is probably incoming. Though late to the game, Apple still sits on the iTunes library, which is the most attractive ‘get’ for streaming fans. Their Beats acquisition gave an early signal on Apple’s intent, as it was the most glamorous acquihire by any tech company, ever. Now, a new job posting has us scratching our heads again, as Apple is searching for an editor with strong connections to the music industry.

iOS 8.3 has wireless CarPlay, and 8.4 may have iTunes streaming

iOS 8.3 has wireless CarPlay, and 8.4 may have iTunes streaming

Earlier today, we heard an interesting rumor about iOS 9, which is said to offer up stability solutions rather than more features for us to play with. We’re a long way off from iOS 9, though, which leaves plenty of time to actually get us more features built into iOS for our iPhones and iPads. With iOS 8.3 already in testing and packing in some CarPlay functionality, it seems iOS 8.4 just might bring us that iTunes streaming service we've long been looking forward to.

Report: Apple plans iTunes streaming option at $7.99/month

Report: Apple plans iTunes streaming option at $7.99/month

We’ve been speculating on it for some time, but with good cause. Apple’s iTunes business model is dated and tired, which is evident by so many reports of digital sales giving way to streaming music. Some sort of iTunes streaming was expected — necessary, even — so the speculation was much less wishful thinking and much more giddy expectation. Details are starting to emerge about Apple’s latest streaming offering, suggesting we’re getting just about everything we want, even cross-platform streaming for Android users.

iTunes 12.1 slips its widget into Notification Center

iTunes 12.1 slips its widget into Notification Center

It's fair to say that iTunes isn't a universally loved app for music management, but Apple has at least boosted usability with the fresh release of iTunes 12.1 this week. The biggest change in the new app is the addition of a Notification Center widget allowing shortcut control over what's playing, and hopefully allowing you to leave iTunes itself minimized to the dock more of the time. The same widget also offers extra features during iTunes Radio streaming, which Apple is presumably hoping will encourage more music downloads.

Apple shuts down iTunes Connect in wake of log-in issues

Apple shuts down iTunes Connect in wake of log-in issues

Now that TestFlight is being wrapped into Apple’s iTunes Connect, problems are starting to show. Many with a Developer account via Apple are reporting that logging in takes them to a different account altogether, which I can sadly corroborate. Even though Developers are using their own credentials, they’re being logged into accounts that aren’t theirs. Larger names like H&R Block and BlackBerry are reported to have been affected by this. So far, there have been no reported issues other than this odd log-in thing, and Apple has pulled the plug while they figure it all out.

iTunes 14-day no-questions-asked app return policy enacted in Europe

iTunes 14-day no-questions-asked app return policy enacted in Europe

A new policy has been enacted in the UK, Germany, Italy, and Germany - amongst others - which allows people to return apps inside an extended period of days. Inside 14 days, the iTunes app store allows a "Right of Cancellation". This includes a right to cancel your order within 14 days of order of your app - except with iTunes Gifts - for any reason at all. This is a significant extension over most return policies for app stores around the world - Apple, Google, Microsoft and all.
