iPad Air 2, mini 3 may be available in-store today

They told us how great both tablets were (or not, depending on your needs), but didn’t commit to a time we’d actually get them. Now it seems Apple has begun seeding the new tablets to stores for sale, but the availability is hit and miss. If you’re looking to snatch a new iPad today, you might be out of luck.

Apple has opened its virtual store doors for preorders of the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, beginning pre-sales of the two new tablets ahead of their availability at retail from next week. The two iOS tablets were announced yesterday at Apple's Cupertino event, running iOS 8.1, and each updated with Touch ID sensors for easier unlocking and payment support with Apple Pay. The biggest changes, however, have been saved for the iPad Air 2, which comes with a new processor as well as an even sleeker design.

iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 — should you upgrade?

With two new iPad models being announced today, there’s one overriding question: should I upgrade? If you’re reading this on an iPad, you might be wondering if it’s worth plopping down some cash at the Apple Store for a new iPad Air or iPad mini. There’s a lot of cool stuff, but the top-end 128GB iPad Air 2 with cellular connectivity starts creeping into the Macbook Air price range. That’s a lot of cash, especially if you’ve got an iPad you’re happy with.

iPad Air 2 vs iPad mini 3 hands-on: an iPad at any cost

iPad Air 2 vs iPad mini 3 hands-on: an iPad at any cost

Apple introduced a couple new devices on-stage this week without going especially far into detail on what’d been changed since their previous generation’s release. One of these devices was the iPad mini 3, a device that didn’t make the generational leap at the same level as the iPad Air 2. At the same time, the release of this tablet bumped down the lowest-cost iPad mini to previously unheard-of low prices for an iPad sold direct by Apple.

Apple slips up, leaks iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3

So, hey — there’s an Apple event tomorrow. We’ve been speculating, like everyone else, that a few new iPads were coming. Typically, that’s just chatter until Apple reveals what they’ve got for us, which usually comes via their announcement. No matter how convincing the leaks or rumors are (remember the iPhone 6?!), we temper it with pragmatism, and patiently wait for Apple to confirm things. They’ve done that a bit early this time, with the new iPad owner’s manual tipping Apple’s iHand for tomorrow’s event.
