You can order Apple’s new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 now

Apple has opened its virtual store doors for preorders of the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, beginning pre-sales of the two new tablets ahead of their availability at retail from next week. The two iOS tablets were announced yesterday at Apple's Cupertino event, running iOS 8.1, and each updated with Touch ID sensors for easier unlocking and payment support with Apple Pay. The biggest changes, however, have been saved for the iPad Air 2, which comes with a new processor as well as an even sleeker design.

iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 — should you upgrade?

With two new iPad models being announced today, there’s one overriding question: should I upgrade? If you’re reading this on an iPad, you might be wondering if it’s worth plopping down some cash at the Apple Store for a new iPad Air or iPad mini. There’s a lot of cool stuff, but the top-end 128GB iPad Air 2 with cellular connectivity starts creeping into the Macbook Air price range. That’s a lot of cash, especially if you’ve got an iPad you’re happy with.

iPad Air 2 vs iPad mini 3 hands-on: an iPad at any cost

iPad Air 2 vs iPad mini 3 hands-on: an iPad at any cost

Apple introduced a couple new devices on-stage this week without going especially far into detail on what’d been changed since their previous generation’s release. One of these devices was the iPad mini 3, a device that didn’t make the generational leap at the same level as the iPad Air 2. At the same time, the release of this tablet bumped down the lowest-cost iPad mini to previously unheard-of low prices for an iPad sold direct by Apple.

Apple slips up, leaks iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3

Apple slips up, leaks iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3

So, hey — there’s an Apple event tomorrow. We’ve been speculating, like everyone else, that a few new iPads were coming. Typically, that’s just chatter until Apple reveals what they’ve got for us, which usually comes via their announcement. No matter how convincing the leaks or rumors are (remember the iPhone 6?!), we temper it with pragmatism, and patiently wait for Apple to confirm things. They’ve done that a bit early this time, with the new iPad owner’s manual tipping Apple’s iHand for tomorrow’s event.

The two new tablets, announced this morning, will work with nine carriers' LTE networks in the US, including the big four, though only T-Mobile is offering 200MB of free data for those who choose to slot in the carrier's SIM.

Retina iPad mini update coming quick says analyst, chip boost in 2014

It would appear that the analysts at NPD DisplaySearch have run the numbers and decided that the iPad mini with full retina-quality display is well on its way. They've made it clear in their most recent report that the iPad mini's first big update will be appearing in the third quarter of 2013, if all goes well, with another update soon after. The second update, says NPD, will include not only a higher-definition display than the first edition - it'll have a boosted mobile processor under the hood, as well.

iPad mini projected to drive AND cannibalize iPad sales in Q1 2013

iPad mini projected to drive AND cannibalize iPad sales in Q1 2013

As Apple's financial Q1 2013 sales report looms (set for the 23rd of this month), Rob Cihra of Evercore Partners has updated projections on sales for the iPad, iPad mini, and everything in-between. Specifically regarding iPad and iPad mini sales, Cihra makes it clear that a 56 percent year-over-year growth is possible comparing Apple's sales of tablets in their financial Q1 for 2011, with a 71 percent boost appearing compared to the quarter immediately before the one about to be stated by the company officially. These numbers suggest the iPad market to be booming, but due to the projection here of iPad mini numbers alone, we're seeing some devouring of iPad sales as well.

iOS 6.0.2 update brings wi-fi fix to iPad mini and iPhone 5

Your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices working with iOS 6 will be receiving an update to your mobile operating system at some point today with a collection of fixes including, first and foremost, a fix for a bug that "could impact Wi-fi." This suggests that there was a wi-fi bug out there in the wild for your iPhone 5 or iPad 4 or iPad mini or any number of different current-generation Apple smart devices. On the other hand we've not experienced any troubles as such - this release is more likely aimed at preventing a problem before it's happened.
