Dell has launched its latest gaming PC, the Alienware Aurora, a hexacore-based powerhouse with liquid-cooling as standard and eye-catching active vents running across the top. Running a choice of Intel 3000 Core i7 processors, paired with the X79 Express chipset, quad-channel DDR3 memory and dual-graphics options each with GDDR5 memory, the new Aurora even managers to look almost subtle with its matte black case and red LED highlights. Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition debuts: 5.6GHz overclock

Intel has outed its latest high-end processor, the Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition, along with a new chipset, the X79 Express, and manufacturers are already jumping all over the performance pair. Maingear has updated its SHIFT, F131 and Quantum SHIFT desktop PCs to use the Core i7-3960X chip, which runs at 3.3GHz but can be overclocked to a huge 5.6GHz thanks to it coming unlocked, as well as 3.9GHz using Intel Turbo, packs six cores and 12 threads, and has 15MB of cache. Upgraders hoping to use the new processor may be frustrated by Intel’s new LGA 2011 socket, however.

Intel has released its latest high-end processor, the Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition, packing six 3.46GHz cores and 12 processing threads. Capable of being overclocked to 3.73GHz using Intel's Turbo Boost technology (and likely higher again, when the aftermarket modders get their hands on the chip), the Core i7-990X Extreme Edition comes with unlocked multipliers so that tweaking the speed is more straightforward. HP Pavilion PCs get Intel/AMD refresh plus Radeon graphics

HP hasn't just been reworking its notebooks with new Intel and AMD CPUs and GPUs; the company's Pavilion desktops have also seen a refresh. The new Pavilion, Slimline and Elite models kick off from $300, $330 and $600 respectively when they arrive on January 9 2011, with the HP Pavilion p6700 starting things off with a Pentium E5700 processor while the HP Elite HPE-500 kicks off with an AMD Phenom II 1045T hexacore.
