Intel kills Smart TV ambitions to focus on tablets

, Oct 12th 2011 Discuss [1]

Intel has ditched plans to push its processors into TVs, tasking engineers in the Digital Home Group to instead focus on tablets, smartphones and ultrabooks like the new ASUS Zenbook UX21. Although Intel will continue to supply chips to set-top box manufacturers such as Comcast and Pace, Bloomberg reports, it will trim its investment into digital TV SoCs. Read The Full Story

ARMDevices' unnamed source at the search giant didn't say whether or not the ARM-based platform was expected to replace Intel's, or live alongside it, but it confirms talk back in November 2010 that ARM was in talks with Google. Amino Freedom Jump MeeGo STB promises to play nicely with operators

, Jan 5th 2011 Discuss [0]

Streaming STBs like Logitech's Revue and the Boxee Box are hugely flexible, but as Google and other have discovered, content owners are turning out to be pretty cautious with who and what can access their multimedia. Amino reckon that's a gap in the market; its Freedom Jump uses the same Intel Atom CE4100 as the Revue and Boxee Box, topped with MeeGo, but is designed to work alongside existing operator pay-TV STBs rather than bypassing them. , Nov 25th 2010 Discuss [8]

You can’t accuse Google of being unambitious. Not content with having their Android OS take great bites out of the smartphone market, the search giant has also put it to work as the core of Google TV, a new play for the home entertainment segment. Most early-adopters will dip their tow with the Logitech Revue, a compact set-top box with a not-so-compact $300 price tag. The promise is that Google TV harnesses the power of search and online media to the breadth of broadcast television, but does the Revue deliver? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.
