Sony VAIO W reviewed: HD screen too much for Intel graphics

Sony VAIO W reviewed: HD screen too much for Intel graphics

Sony have already confirmed that they attempted to differentiate their VAIO W netbook from rivals by giving it a relatively high-resolution 1,366 x 768 10.1-inch display, but in doing so did they undermine the Atom N270-based budget ultraportable's overall performance?  That's one possibility raised by Computer Shopper in their review of the Sony VAIO W, describing the graphics showing as "lackluster".

Intel Pine Trail nettop chips, plus Core i3 and Core i9 CPUs coming Q1 2010?

After word slipped out from Taiwan earlier this week that Intel were considering pushing back the release of the Pine Trail Atom N450 processor until the first half of 2010, now comes more specific news from PC manufacturers that both the netbook platform, Pine Trail-M, and its Pine Trail-D nettop sibling will both now arrive in the first quarter of next year.  That, say the unnamed sources, will coincide with the release of Intel's 32nm Core i9 processors, codenamed Gulftown, and offering six cores.

Strong Atom sales only good news for Intel Q2 2009 finances

Strong Atom sales only good news for Intel Q2 2009 finances

Stronger than expected sales of Atom processors have seen Intel post Q2 2009 revenues of $8.0bn, up 12-percent on the previous quarter, though not enough to avoid recording a net income loss of $1.0bn.  Atom CPUs such as the N270, a common sight in netbooks and budget ultraportables, defied the trend for falling processor ASPs (average selling prices) by climbing 65-percent sequentially, and bolstering the company coffers by $362m alone.

Atom N450 netbooks may face delays over OEM caution

It looks like the torrent of Atom N270 netbooks won't be followed by a similar rush of Atom N450-based budget ultraportables, as several manufacturers have apparently revealed plans to delay mass production until netbook heavyweights Acer and ASUS show their hand.  That could push bulk availability back until the first half of 2010, despite engineering samples of the new Intel N450 chip already being available.

Atom N270 netbook official Windows 7 upgrades unlikely

Windows 7 may run well on an Intel Atom N270/N280 based netbook, but according to the latest rumors manufacturers of the budget ultraportables may not be offering users access to the "Upgrade to Windows 7" program.  A combination of price and low demand is being blamed for the decision, which if followed through would mean that buyers of Windows XP netbooks in the run-up to Windows 7's launch would not be eligible to a free upgrade once the OS arrives on October 22nd.

bModo 12G Windows 7 tablet gets video demo

With the tablet torrent at CES 2011 we'll admit to having forgotten about bModo's 12G tablet, announced in October last year, but the 11.6-inch Windows 7 slate has now shown up for a full review. AllTouchTablet picked up the $849.99 slate - which runs a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 single-core CPU with 2GB of RAM and Broadcom's CrystalHD video accelerator - and found the Windows experience to be pretty solid, with media playback impressing.
