The big Instagram losers lost millions

The big Instagram losers lost millions

Instagram's cull of spam accounts and users not toeing the line over community guidelines has taken a huge bite out of the follow counts for many high-profile users, a pre/post "Instapurge" survey has revealed. Announced last week as part of the photo-sharing social network's ongoing war against fake profiles, the spam sweep took effect yesterday and wiped anything from a handful of followers from some user's accounts, to several million from others - including Instagram's own account, in fact. Among the biggest losers have been musicians, with Justin Bieber, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift all seeing their fan numbers tumble, but it's the non-celebrity users who have been most vocal in their outrage.

Don’t panic if your Instagram follower count just dived

Don’t panic if your Instagram follower count just dived

Instagram has flipped the kill-switch on spam accounts, and it's a move which is likely to prompt some surprise among users of the photo sharing social network, as their follower counts take a hit. The company announced earlier this month that, while it may have 300 million users, it also has something of a spam account problem, and one it intended to deal with. While verified accounts for celebrities and other high-profile users was one strand of that, the other is a cull of fake profiles that has taken effect today.

Instagram has five new filters, slight layout change

Twitter, in an attempt to make themselves a bit more like Instagram, recently introduced photo filters. Those filters struck an eerie resemblance to Instagram’s, which is now challenging Twitter with regard to user metrics. If we’re playing the photo filter tit-for-tat, Instagram just took their turn, and has introduced five new looks for your photos. With so many filters, Instagram is also altering how you access them, and letting you re-arrange how they’re ordered. If you’re curious what the new filters are all about, keep reading.

Instagram has 300 million active users, may be bigger than Twitter

Instagram has announced via a blog post they are (probably) larger than Twitter. Their service has grown to well over 300 million users, but the real story is how many are using it. According to Instagram, they have a monthly active user number almost as high as their overall user metrics. At 284 million users monthly, they’ve likely outpaced Twitter. Put that way, it’s easy to see why Twitter recently copied the very thing people like about Instagram, rolling in the same filters and ease-of-use.

Instagram is busted; it’s not just your feed

Instagram is busted; it’s not just your feed

Have you noticed a few issues with Instagram today? If pics or videos not loading has you scratching your head, you’re not alone. Not only have we here at SlashGear noticed it, but others around the world have as well. In addition to a spike in reported problems, Instagram took to (oddly enough) Twitter to let everyone know they were aware of the problems, and were working on a fix. Still, the popular photo-sharing service remains hamstrung for many users.

Twitter’s new photo filters pinch Instagram’s cool

Twitter’s new photo filters pinch Instagram’s cool

Maybe it’s all the Instagram-linked posts on Twitter that brought this on, we don’t know. What we do know is that Twitter has updated their photo filters, replacing the ones they last instituted in 2012. Aside from just plain looking like they belong in 2014/2015, the filters bring in a new bit of functionality and features to the mix. If nothing else, it looks like Twitter is trying to pinch what makes Instagram cool, as the filters are almost a dead ringer for what you get via Instagram.

You can finally fix Instagram caption goofs

Instagram has always been about sharing the moment, but the inability to edit captions once posted has also made it a frustrating way to share typos, too. Happily an update today is addressing that, with caption editing now supported on both iOS and Android so that any goofs, last-minute hashtag addition, or other essential tweaks can be made without having to delete the whole photo and post it again from scratch. Meanwhile, Instagram is also making it easier to find new people, by building out the Explore page.

Instagram wants to spotlight its citizen journalists

Instagram is exploring ways to blur the lines between its users and the mainstream media, with the Facebook-owned photo and video sharing service hoping to enable broader reach for citizen journalists. Speaking during the Code/Mobile conference on how Instagram has been increasingly used as a way for regular people to publicize their experiences - whether that be during a civil uprising, a natural disaster, or a concert - co-founder and head of engineering Mike Krieger said the app's scope there is next in line to be emphasized.
