Apple first introduced the new iMessage feature for iOS 5 back at WWDC 2011 as a unified messaging service that could deliver both text and multimedia messages over WiFi or 3G. It also offered read and delivery receipts as well as real-time typing indication. It was set to work for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices. And now, it appears Apple plans on integrating the feature for Macs as well.

Samsung unveils ChatON service to compete with iMessage, BBM, and others

Samsung has announced that it will be rolling out a new messaging service that will allow users to chat across multiple devices. ChatON will be offered in over 120 countries in 62 languages. The service supports photos, video, voice messaging, location, contact sharing, calendar, and other multimedia content. The interesting part is that Samsung is looking to take ChatON outside its own ecosystem.

As the rumors go, Apple's iMessage announcement came as quite the unpleasant shock to the carriers, who until now had been happily encouraging SMS overuse on the iPhone. Reports of RIM executives weeping visibly over BBM are all anecdotal. iMessage promises to further prise the operator's hands from the ruddy teats of the SMS cash-cow, shifting traffic to cheaper data connections instead. Yet the real game-changer may still be waiting in the wings: with a little work, Google could blow iMessage, BBM and SMS out of the water.

Well it's about damn time the MacBook grew up. For years now, many of us OS X devotees have peered over the fence with envious eyes as Windows machines were given far more portable form-factors. Lenovo has been leading the pack in svelteness, and Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 has been appealing with its detachable keyboard, but at the end of the day Windows simply doesn't do it for me. The arrival of the new MacBook, however, meant those days of coveting notebooks could be long gone, with Apple taking the proven design of the MacBook Air and cutting out every last scrap of excess until - for the most part - only the features that matter remain. That's the theory, at least; I took the MacBook on the road to see if it was also the same in practice.

App Store down? It’s not just you (and iTunes is hit too)

Apple may have had a good Monday with the launch of the Apple Watch and the new MacBook, but Wednesday is proving to be a downer with App Store and iTunes problems meaning new downloads and updates are unavailable for many. The downtime began more than five and a half hours ago, according to Apple's own service status page, with users unable to access not only the App Store and iTunes for software, music, and video downloads, but the iBooks Store and Mac App Store also affected.
