Samsung unveils ChatON service to compete with iMessage, BBM, and others

Samsung has announced that it will be rolling out a new messaging service that will allow users to chat across multiple devices. ChatON will be offered in over 120 countries in 62 languages. The service supports photos, video, voice messaging, location, contact sharing, calendar, and other multimedia content. The interesting part is that Samsung is looking to take ChatON outside its own ecosystem.

As the rumors go, Apple's iMessage announcement came as quite the unpleasant shock to the carriers, who until now had been happily encouraging SMS overuse on the iPhone. Reports of RIM executives weeping visibly over BBM are all anecdotal. iMessage promises to further prise the operator's hands from the ruddy teats of the SMS cash-cow, shifting traffic to cheaper data connections instead. It's not that the CEO of BlackBerry, John Chen, doesn't know what Net Neutrality means. It's just that he - and the rest of the company - want it to mean something that also happens to be extremely beneficial to them. Chen suggests that Net Neutrality should include apps and services, and that this means that Apple should be lawfully obligated to release their iMessage app and service to all mobile operating systems, not just iOS - not just the iPhone, but BlackBerry devices too.

This week Gmail is out in China. Most Google services have been disrupted in China since June. Google's own traffic listing for Gmail in China shows the service dropping down to zero near the end of the 25th of December - it's been at around a zero signal since then. Imagine if this happened in the United States. Even a disruption of an hour in the USA results in a news blast and a Twitter explosion - imagine if not only Gmail was out, but all Google services at once.

ChatOn hasn’t been terribly popular with users around the world.
