Fire Phone teardown: Extra cameras set Bezos tough challenge

Fire Phone teardown: Extra cameras set Bezos tough challenge

Amazon's Fire Phone could have been a potent mid-range challenger had the retailer opted to leave out the 3D interface gimmicks, teardown analysis suggests, with the polarizing quad-camera system an outlier in what's otherwise an exercise in cost-cutting. The final bill of materials for the Fire Phone, released last week, comes to around $205 in components according to IHS iSuppli's calculations, undercutting what Samsung is believed to spend on each Galaxy S5, but more expensive than an iPhone 5s.

LG slashes curved OLED to drive display tech

LG slashes curved OLED to drive display tech

LG is aiming to give curved OLED TVs a serious push into the living room, slashing the price of its first set as it tries to "significantly grow" demand for OLED in 2014. The LG 55EA9800, a 55-inch curved OLED Full HD TV, was announced back at CES 2013 and went on sale in the US in April last year, though at the fairly off-putting price of $14,999.95. Now, less than a year later, LG has trimmed that down by more than half.

Xbox One vs PS4 build cost teardown tips little room for profit

Microsoft spends close to a hundred dollars more on parts for its Xbox One than Sony does on each PlayStation 4, independent teardown costing suggests, with the mandatory Kinect sensor adding a considerable chunk to the console. The Xbox One comes in at around $471, of which the Kinect accounts for around $75, according to IHS' figures, whereas the PS4 totals around $381; still, either way, there's little space for profit on either console, the numbers indicate.

iPad mini Retina Display review – the holy grail of tablets

It's the iPad mini we've been waiting for: Apple's smaller tablet that, thanks to a Retina display and brand new A7 processor, now punches above its size and makes a legitimate alternative not only for compact-screen Android and Windows rivals, but Apple's own iPad Air too. That Apple has achieved all that with minimal compromises on weight and battery life seems almost too good to be true: could the iPad mini with Retina display be the best tablet in the range? Read on for our full review.

Crash-avoidance tech rated as safest “smart cars” named

Independent testing on crash-avoidance systems has begun for the first time in the US, with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) putting auto-braking and other technologies through their paces. The new program - which has started out testing 2013-14 model year midsize cars and SUVs - assigns one of three levels of performance to the systems it reviews, either basic, advanced, or superior. So far, out of 74 vehicles tested, the IIHS has found seven worthy of the top-tier superior rating.

Is Apple’s iPhone pricing outrageous or sound business?

Is Apple’s iPhone pricing outrageous or sound business?

Earlier this week, a teardown by IHS revealed that Apple’s iPhone 5c costs the company $173 to produce, representing a 12 percent reduction compared to the iPhone 5. The entry-level iPhone 5s, meanwhile, sets customers back $199.

The news was not at all surprising. Apple has for years been building products for a relatively cheap sum. But as Apple continues to generate massive profits and carriers sell unlocked iPhones for several hundred dollars, I can’t help but wonder if the company is going a little far with its pricing.

iPhone 5s build cost pegged at $199, iPhone 5c at $173

When a device as popular as the iPhone is torn down by a group like IHS, every little nook and cranny is investigated with great interest. What the team at IHS have found today, shared with AllThingsD today, but will be producing in full tomorrow, is that their teardown has pulled up costs of "at least" $199 for the construction of the iPhone 5s. They've also found that the iPhone 5c must cost Apple around $173 USD to build, citing the display to cost the most for both models.
