Apple Television prototypes trialling Sharp screens say sources (again)

It's the rumor that refuses to die: Apple's HDTV plans are again making headlines, with new reports that Foxconn has been piecing together fresh prototypes complete with Sharp displays. "It isn't a formal project yet" one of the supply chain tipsters tells the WSJ, "it is still in the early stage of testing"; that's despite other sources suggesting that Apple's dalliance with television prototypes has lasted for "a number of years."

iPad mini 2 Retina display tipped already in pipeline from AUO

The iPad mini may be in short supply, but Apple's hardware partners are already readying the Retina-spec display for the iPad mini 2, according to sources in China. AU Optronics, which is one of Apple's suppliers of 1024 x 768 panels for the current iPad mini, expects to begin mass producing 2048 x 1536 resolution 7.9-inch displays by the second half of 2013, DoNews reports, with eye-pleasing pixel density of 324 ppi.

It’s no secret that Apple has been talking to content providers in the past, presumably for the mythical Apple Television, but the Wall Street Journal reports that the company is currently in talks with US cable providers to allow consumers to use a set-top-box manufactured by Cupertino. The box will reportedly allow consumers to access live television as well as other content, according to people familiar with the matter.

Sharp and Hydis announce LCD license agreement

There have been rumblings in the past that Hydis’ FFS LCD technology would make its way into certain tablets, and now the Korean manufacturer has signed a license agreement with Sharp that will see the two companies using each other's technology. The agreement will allow Sharp to make use of Hydis’ Fringe Field Switching LCD technology, which is similar to IPS technology but allows for higher brightness and a superior color gamut.
