When Huawei sent over their new and soon to be released smartphone set to debut in Asia in Q4 called the Huawei Honor (U8860) also known as the Glory, I was expecting another run of the mill Android smartphone for the budget crowd like their previous devices. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The Honor offers a 1.4 GHz processor, Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread, an HDR capable 8 megapixel camera and a huge battery. I quickly realized this was a much better phone than I’d thought. Now that I’ve had some time with it here’s my thoughts.

Huawei, so far, has been content to push out low-cost Android smartphones and the odd tablet; now it seems the company has set its sights far higher. The Huawei Vision pairs a 3.7-inch touchscreen with Qualcomm's 1GHz MSM8255 processor, 512MB of RAM and 2GB of ROM, and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread in an HTC-style unibody chassis that will be available in silver, rose gold and charcoal. A smaller version of the original eDGe clamshell, the Pocket eDGe pairs a 7-inch WVGA color resistive touchscreen with a 6-inch 800 x 600 E Ink display with a Wacom active digitizer. Like two rival gangs having a child together. No violence between them yet, but someone DID get shot today - a Galaxy Tab. In response, Angry Birds released 45 new levels, and someone records a UFO on an HTC EVO 4G. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab isn’t the only 7-inch Android slate taking on Steve Jobs’ iPad preferences; Huawei still falls short of being a household name, but the company has nonetheless managed to get its Ideos S7 tablet on Best Buy shelves alongside the Galaxy Tab later this month.
