PureView: The Tech Behind Nokia’s Salvation

, May 24th 2012 Discuss [0]

Nokia has big plans for PureView, including thinner handsets and Windows Phone support, though there’s more than just branding that’s getting in the way of slimming the smartphone camera tech. We grabbed some hands-on playtime with the Nokia 808 PureView in Germany this week, at the headquarters of long-time photography partner Carl Zeiss, where we not only discovered just what the camera is capable of, but some of the decisions – technical, product and otherwise – behind the PureView concept. And make no mistake: if any one thing signifies Nokia’s potential salvation in the mobile industry, PureView is it.

iPhone 5 and iPod touch panels leaked

Several of what appear very much to be iPhone 5 hardware components have been leaked today by a photographer showing what they say will be near-final pieces of the next-generation smartphone. The iPhone 5, also known at this point as The New iPhone, has been shown here to be working with a 3.95-inch display and are apparently identical to what the next iPod touch will be working with as well. These photos are accompanied by several photos of the camera components that are said to be set for the interiors of both devices as well. Read The Full Story

Voyager Mobile finally open for business

, May 21st 2012 Discuss [0]

If you’re willing to be a little flexible with your choice of smartphone, you can save a pretty penny by subscribing to an MVNO instead of one of the main four carriers in the US. MVNOs piggyback on their networks but typically offer better deals. One such MVNO is Voyager Mobile, who promised to bring unlimited tariffs to a CDMA network near you without breaking the bank but has suffered some delays. Today Voyager has officially launched with prices that might entice you. Read The Full Story

CTIA 2012 round-up: Devices

, May 10th 2012 Discuss [0]

The first of two round-up posts we’ve got here for the US-based mobile show of the year CTIA is one of devices exclusively, everything you need to know about what was well worth seeing down in New Orleans here in 2012. As for devices, there really wasn’t a whole lot of new action coming on from this week specifically, but what was new was fabulous, and what was once only overseas was brought on with a fury.

Google Sooner spills Android’s earliest secrets

, May 7th 2012 Discuss [0]

Android has certainly come a long way from Google's first mention of the Open Handset Alliance, and little shows it quite so well as the Google Sooner. HTC's first prototype for Google's Android development, the Sooner was a non-touch QWERTY handset used for the earliest demos of the platform, five years ahead of flagships like the Galaxy S III and the One X. App developer and serial prototype acquirer Steve Troughton-Smith managed to pick up a Sooner device and has shared some details. AT&T ‘regrets’ Unlimited Data

, May 4th 2012 Discuss [0]

This week AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson spoke up with the New York Times on his biggest regret, that being AT&T's first introduction of unlimited mobile data for smartphone customers. This will probably not come as a huge surprise for customers who had less than an entertaining time about two years ago when unlimited data died for the first time on the network with tiered data bumping up costs each year since. But for AT&T, and every other mobile carrier for that matter, it only makes basic business sense (and dollars) that you'd make a customer pay for a product based on how much of it they take.
