In Pursuit of Brand Me

, Jun 27th 2011 Discuss [2]

We are a social animal. That doesn’t exactly demand a psych degree to figure out. Yet we’re also a private one; there’s a little of the Gollum about us, clutching close our “precious” secrets and inside-knowledge. It’s no surprise that one of the recurring entries on the periodic “top ten ways to annoy people on social networks” lists is the “mysterious update.” You know the sort: “Big changes afoot…” or “Oh ffs, not again!” leaving readers curious and goggle-eyed (you hope) or simply frustrated (more likely) over what exactly it is in your interesting, exciting life that you’re teasing about today.

HTC Wildfire S Review

, Apr 29th 2011 Discuss [38]

Expectations around the HTC Wildfire S are, a little surprisingly, high. The third of HTC’s new Android devices from MWC 2011 in February, the entry-level smartphone replaces the Wildfire, a device which managed to carve itself quite the niche among pre-pay users and the budget or bulk conscious. Now the S-variant comes to further refine the lineage: we’re a long way from the Tattoo, but has HTC done enough to keep the Wildfire S relevant today? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Angry Birds devs admit lightweight version in works for underpowered Android phones

, Nov 19th 2010 Discuss [0]

In a move likely to stoke controversy over Android fragmentation, Angry Birds developer Rovio Mobile has announced that, because of issues with low-power smartphones proving unable to cope with the game's processing requirements, they will be developing a second, "lightweight" version for users with such phones. "We have hesitated to create multiple versions of Angry Birds for the Android platform" the company said, "but judging by the feedback we have received, we feel that by providing a lightweight solution, we are doing a favour for our fans." HTC Wildfire Review

, Jun 26th 2010 Discuss [12]

The HTC Wildfire is the company’s second attempt at a budget Android device, its predecessor being the underspecified and relatively unloved Tattoo. Packing the same Sense UI as more expensive siblings like the Legend and Desire, together with a 5-megapixel camera and a multitouch-capable display, does the Wildfire manage to be both affordable and feature-rich? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

HTC Wildfire gets video unboxing

, Jun 17th 2010 Discuss [0]

The Samsung Galaxy S isn’t the only Android 2.1 smartphone to arrive here today; we’ve just taken delivery of the HTC Wildfire, the company’s new entry-level smartphone and quite the mini-Desire and promptly shot an unboxing video and shared some hands-on first impressions over at Android Community.  Packing a compact 3.2-inch QVGA capacitive touchscreen, 3G/UMTS, HTC Sense and a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, the Wildfire walks the tightrope between budget and functionality, and it seems to do a whole lot better than the Tattoo it replaces.

HTC Smart Review

, May 17th 2010 Discuss [31]

With a wealth of high-end smartphones on the market, and eye-catching alternatives such as the fourth-generation iPhone HD and WiMAX-toting HTC EVO 4G just around the corner, it’s easy to forget that the real sales movement happens down at the more affordable levels. Crashing into that market comes the HTC Smart, a smartphone with a spec-sheet that looks anaemic in comparison to most rivals but a similarly slender price tag to boot. Based on Qualcomm’s Brew MP OS – healthily reskinned with HTC Sense – the Smart hopes to pull in the entry-level smartphone crowd, graduating from their dumbphones. Does it deliver, or have HTC had to shave away too much to meet a bargain-basement price? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

HTC Smart first-impressions

, May 11th 2010 Discuss [2]

The HTC Smart has just dropped onto the SlashGear desk, and while this budget BREW handset may not have the same wow-factor as one of the company’s more recent Android smartphones like the Desire or Legend, it’s interesting simply for representing a push from the company into the mainstream.  Qualcomm’s BREW OS keeps things ticking, but on top of that is the HTC Sense UI complete with Friend Stream social network integration.  Check out our first-impressions after the cut.

Tiny Vodafone 845 Android 2.1 phone spotted

, Apr 15th 2010 Discuss [0]

Android devices with 2.8-inch QVGA displays haven't exactly been flooding the market, but if you're holding out for an ultra-compact handset running Android 2.1 Eclair then just such a thing may be almost upon us.  Freshly leaked to the::unwired, the Vodafone 845 has dualband UMTS/HSPA, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1, along with a 3.2-megapixel camera, but measures a sub-Tattoo 100 x 55 x 13 mm. The 845 hardware is apparently the handiwork of Huawei, with the phone being otherwise known as the Joy.  It won't be the first time we've seen a Huawei Android device attempt to take a bite out of the entry-level market; the company are responsible for the T-Mobile Pulse, a budget Android smartphone though with a 3.5-inch touchscreen rather than the Vodafone 845's compact panel.
