HTC Shift Reviewed

So Mr. Hugo Ortega over at Gottabemobile got the HTC Shift for about 60 hours to use in a presentation and, for the reason we are here now, to review it. What does he think about it? In a nutshell, he loves it.

So what does this UMPC have going for it that others don’t? First it does double duty as both a PDA and a UMPC. It does so by having two separate processors and corresponding OS’s that it can switch between with the touch of a button. The first is a Qualcomm 400MHz processor that powers the Windows Mobile 6 OS, in this mode the battery will last almost a week. However, push the button and switch on the Intel processor at 800MHz and Windows Vista Business, and the battery life is drastically cut to a mere 3 hours.

HTC Shift mobile computer sports Intel’s new Ultra Mobile platform 2007!

Up until today, HTC kept the heart and soul of the Shift under lock and key. Today, at the Intel Developer Forum, HTC announced that its new groundbreaking mobile computer, the HTC Shift, would feature Intel’s new Ultra Mobile Platform 2007.

Intel's Ultra Mobile platform 2007 is based on the Intel Pentium M architecture consisting of the Intel A110 processor, Intel 945GU Express chipset, and Intel ICH74 I/O controller hub. So what does all this mean to you as the owner of the Shift? Simply put, you’ll get a significantly longer battery life.

I had a chance to test out the Shift at CTIA wireless, and must confess that it just rocks. There are so many high-end features such as an innovative QWERTY-based keyboard layout, 3G connectivity (high-speed global connectivity with Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA), Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi.

I can’t wait to get my hands on a production unit to review!

No fair! Vincent gets some time with the HTC Shift

Are you tired of hearing about the HTC Shift yet? I hope not, because I haven't gotten tired of writing about it. Vincent was lucky enough to attend a hands-on demonstration with it during is time at CTIA. Jason Chen from Gizmodo was there as well. Who do you think was more fired up about it? Wake up Vincent, The show's not over yet!

Seriously though, he's been running around all week trying to get his hands on all the latest products for you guys to see. It's understandable that he might look a little out of it sometimes. I just couldn't resist putting this picture up. That's what happens when you have someone else go through and clean up all of your pictures. Anywho, on to the good stuff!

New video clip of the HTC shift

New video clip of the HTC shift

With all of the great products at CTIA this year, it seems like we just keep going back to the HTC Shift. We can't help it, it's just awesome. Vincent knows how much we loved his pictures that he went back for a short video clip.

Unfortunately for Vincent, the Shift was kept behind glass, so he didn't get to play with it while he was there. He did get to take some nice pictures and capture this short clip for us.

The Shift is HTC's first UMPC, and so far, it looks great. It has a 7-inch display that looks absolutely stunning, a 30GB hard drive, and a 1.2 Ghz VIA CPU. Expect to get your own hands-on review when these come out in Q3 this year.

HTC EVO Shift 4G goes head to head with EVO 4G, Motorola DROID 2 [Video]

Sprint's HTC EVO Shift 4G is official, and retailer Wirefly has wasted no time in putting up a demo video of their own to encourage would-be WiMAX buyers to opt for their pre-order rather than buying from Sprint direct. In a ten minute video they demo the EVO Shift 4G's main features and then pit it against an HTC EVO 4G and some other QWERTY Android devices to see how it compares.
