HTC Desire 816 and Desire 610 finally get US launch

HTC Desire 816 and Desire 610 finally get US launch

HTC has been teasing Americans for some time with its mainstream line of Android phones, but the Desire 610 and Desire 816 are finally getting a US release. Part of HTC's strategy to flesh out its midrange - a gap in which the company blamed for its mediocre performance back in 2013 - the two phones had been on sale in various locations in Europe and the rest of the world before now, but will soon show up on Virgin Mobile among other carriers.

Which phones let me control any TV?

Which phones let me control any TV?

There’s no one phone that’s able to control every single television model in the universe - but there are several out there today that have big potential for chaos. While we don’t recommend going around changing channels on televisions that belong to high-powered businesses that’d rip your head of if you do, we do like the idea of changing the channel at a party if something less-than-pleasing pops up.

Amazon Fire Phone review: The shopper’s smartphone

Amazon Fire Phone review: The shopper’s smartphone

When Amazon wades into a new segment, competitors take note, and few devices have been so nervously anticipated as the Fire Phone. Amazon's first smartphone doesn't just put Prime in your pocket, it also pushes the limits of UI, with its quartet of Dynamic Perspective cameras, and computational photography, with Firefly. Ambitious, then, but Jeff Bezos & Co. have seldom lacked that. Question is, does the Fire Phone deserve to be the hottest handset in town?

HTC One M8 helps turn a profit (but where next?)

HTC was counting on the One M8 to turn its fortunes around, and it looks like there's been some early movement in that direction, with a shift to profit after sales of the metal-bodied flagship began. HTC recorded a net profit of $92.3m in the April through June period of this year, on revenues of $2.2bn, a sharp turnaround from the losses of the previous quarters.

I've spent some time with the Fire Phone today: read on for some first impressions.

Amazon’s phone is the most mundane thing it’s working on

Amazon has reportedly been working on its new, 3D smartphone since 2009, according to a profile of the Lab126 team responsible for the handset we're expecting to see revealed on Wednesday, but it could in fact be the most mainstream of the products the retail behemoth is cooking up. Sharing workbench space in the clandestine skunkworks previously responsible for the Kindle ereader and Fire TV set-top box are tipped to be projected computer interfaces and more.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini breaks cover alongside big brother

Samsung's Galaxy S5 Mini, the inevitable compact version of the flagship Galaxy S5, has starred in an unofficial photoshoot with its bigger brother, confirming that the 4.5-inch handset won't actually be that much smaller. Samsung is yet to officially announce the Galaxy S5 Mini, though the specifications are now well known: a 720p Super AMOLED display, fingerprint heart-rate scanner, and a new Exynos 3 Quad processor of the Korean company's own creation.

HTC One Sense 6.0 arrives this weekend

HTC One Sense 6.0 arrives this weekend

Over the weekend several HTC One units from the previous generation have been updated to Sense 6.0. This means that they’ll have the same - or rather similar - software to that of the HTC One (M8). This update does not include (of course) some of the camera features included with the HTC One (M8) as this device (the M7) does not have the same hardware as its replacement.
