Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge Review

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge Review

Samsung has a lackluster track record making flagship smartphones with serious lust-appeal. Its plastic-bodied Galaxy range was the Camry trying to play in Mercedes and Audi territory, earnestly ticking the boxes on the spec sheet, but failing to grasp that owners care about a sense of prestige as much they do a roster of the latest functionality. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and its flashy Galaxy S6 edge sibling are a lesson hard-learned, then, with both patchy sales and increasingly vocal criticism in 2014 demanding changes be made. 2015 might well be the fiercest year in phone tech yet; these two are evidence of Samsung's A-game.

HTC One M9 Plus coming April 8th

HTC One M9 Plus coming April 8th

In just under a week, HTC will be holding an event in Beijing called "More than One." This event will likely reveal the fullness of the HTC One M9 Plus, a smartphone that takes the specifications of the HTC One M9 up a notch with a larger display and a physical home button. Also unlike the HTC One M9, this device has a dual-lens camera, just like the HTC One M8. This smartphone will likely launch in Asia first, followed by a (smaller) launch internationally.

Samsung Gear VR, Galaxy S6, Edge in-store near-hands-on at Best Buy

Samsung Gear VR, Galaxy S6, Edge in-store near-hands-on at Best Buy

Here's what'll happen when you walk into a Best Buy this weekend - supposing you're in one of the locations that has The Samsung Gear VR Experience inside. You'll immediately be greeted by a couple of "SIX APPEAL" pylons covering the metal detectors that don every front entrance to Best Buy locations. From there, you'll see several massive Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge posters and metal-framed information boards. If you didn't already know before walking in, you'll know before you pass the front gate: the Galaxy S6 family is clearly in the house.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge release details and first-impressions

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge release details and first-impressions

Samsung has announced US availability for its flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge smartphones, and what better way to celebrate them landing on the SlashGear review bench than an impromptu photo-shoot. Announced back at Mobile World Congress earlier this month, the metal- and glass-bodied Android smartphones mark the beginning of a new - and welcome - design direction for Samsung, swapping the plastic of their forebears for a far more premium feel. The S6 edge, meanwhile, raises the stakes with a double-curved AMOLED display. Consider the gauntlet thrown down well and truly to the iPhone 6 and HTC One M9; read on for our first-impressions.

HTC One M9 Review – Gambling on Quality

HTC One M9 Review – Gambling on Quality

What does it take to create a smartphone design classic? For the HTC One M9, the answer is relentless refinement, improving what worked in its metal-bodied predecessors rather than chasing the latest trends. The smartphone spec arms-race is relentless, however, notable as much for its hyperbole as the minimal attention span of would-be buyers in carrier stores. If you can’t make your case in seconds, you’re going to lose the sale. Amid fierce competition, HTC doesn’t exactly have the greatest track record of playing up its strengths and capitalizing on its advantages. Has that changed in the One M9?

The changing of the guard: Cher Wang is the new HTC CEO

The changing of the guard: Cher Wang is the new HTC CEO

CEO changes happen. Sometimes, the current head steps down for health or personal reasons. Sometimes, it's merely to give way to a younger generation. But on average, such high-level management shifts usually betray some problem that a company is scrambling to resolve, partly by changing the CEO. When that company is HTC and that CEO is Peter Chou, that might very well be the case. The Taiwanese OEM has just announced that, effective immediately, Ms. Cher Wang will be the company's new chief executive, bring perhaps hopes of a revived HTC.

HTC has big announcement coming for One M9

HTC has big announcement coming for One M9

When T-Mobile sent out invitations for their next ‘uncarrier’ event, the mysterious language of the email blast got us thinking. Only telling us it was “a real piece of work”, we were left wondering what was going on. The company has given us plenty to be excited about with previous events, so we are expecting something impressive this time around as well. A tweet from HTC America chief Jason Mackenzie might have just tipped T-Mobile’s hat, though, saying there would also be news on the HTC One M9 this Wednesday.

MWC 2015 round-up; Samsung, HTC lead the way

MWC 2015 round-up; Samsung, HTC lead the way

Though we weren’t expecting a whole lot, Mobile World Congress was actually rather delightful this year. We got exactly what we came for, and even some additional surprises from top OEMs and others. There were some obvious highlights, like the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, but some other highlights like Jolla’s new tablet. HTC brought out their new smartphone for us to check out, but also slapped a fitness band on our wrist and VR headset on our face. But that wasn’t all! Here are some of our highlights from MWC 2015.

HTC Vive hands-on: That Valve VR wow-factor

HTC Vive hands-on: That Valve VR wow-factor

I’m going to be blunt with you, words can’t do justice to the experience of using HTC’s Vive virtual reality headset. There’s nothing quite like slipping into a virtual 3D world, as I did this week in a preview of Vive ahead of developer units shipping this spring. Cloistered in a room at the back of HTC’s Mobile World Congress stand, and with the reassuring voice of a Vive engineer whispering in my ear, I got to try out a number of demo apps and environments created for the platform by Valve and others, including the first announced title for SteamVR.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge hands-on: 2015’s hard-hitters

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge hands-on: 2015’s hard-hitters

You might want to sit down for this one: Samsung has, with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, finally built the Android smartphones we’ve been asking it for. Freshly announced at Mobile World Congress 2015 today, the new flagship pair also debut a new design language for the South Korean company, taking what was hinted at with the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4, and finally doing away with Samsung’s old plastic fetish in favor of metal, glass, and - in the case of the Galaxy S6 edge - double-curved AMOLED. Read on past the cut for my first-impressions.
