Details of Microsoft's various XOOM models have been released, with the initial Verizon version of the slate up against the WiFi-only MZ604 and HSPA MZ601/MZ603 versions. Meanwhile, Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha has defended the $799 pricing of the 32GB Verizon XOOM MZ600, confirmed earlier this week, saying that it's the potential for 4G that makes the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet more valuable than Apple's iPad.

Intel Shipping XMM 6260 HSPA+ modem, Introduces LTE XMM 7060

Intel announced on Monday that it will begin shipping the XMM 6260 platform to key partners. The plaform supports HSPA+ networks with download speeds up to 21Mbps and upload speeds up to 11.5Mbps. The platform is said to use less power than competitor's products (especially ARM). XMM 6260 is built with the 40nm manufacturing process, and is based on the X-GOLD 626 baseband processor and the SMARTi UE2 RF transceiver.

MeeGo superphone bug report tips 1.6GHz Atom & HSPA+

A MeeGo bug report could have spilled the beans on an upcoming flagship smartphone, with the promise of a 1.6GHz Intel processor, 854 x 480 display, 21Mbps HSPA+ support and NFC. Over at the Maemo forums they've dug through the chip references and come up with a lengthy hardware feature list that suggests Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's comments on building, catalysing or joining "a competitive ecosystem" may well be, as we suggested, a sign that the Finnish company intends to participate in the smartphone spec-sheet "arms race".

Ericsson achieves three HSPA records

This morning Ericsson stated they had achieved three new HSPA (high speed packet access) speed records. The first was using a multi-carrier HSPA that reached 168Mbps on the download and 24Mbps on the uplink. The record speeds were done using a prototype consumer device and commercial network equipment.

Android Sidekick 4G rumored for T-Mobile HSPA+ [Update: Confirmed!]

T-Mobile's Sidekick range met its end back in July 2010, with the carrier promising it was would "work on the next chapter of our storied Sidekick franchise." According to TmoNews, that chapter will involve Android 2.3 Gingerbread; their source claims to have been briefed this week on a new T-Mobile Sidekick 4G running Google's open-source platform and packing both a physical QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen display.
