While it’s not our job to fight stupid on the internet, in this case, SlashGear felt the need to step in. Rob Enderle is presently a columnist for TechNewsWorld and owns Enderle Group, a tech consultancy for personal gadgets and trends. New iPad: The Skeptic’s Review
I sent back the iPad 2, but I’m keeping the new iPad. Two years ago I wrote my first iPad skeptic’s review, a more oblique – and personal – opinion on Apple’s tablet than the traditional SlashGear review. A year later I did the same for the iPad 2, finding it improved but, from a combination of hardware and software, not sufficient of an upgrade for my needs to justify keeping it. Now Apple is up to its third-generation tablet, criticized by some as another “minor” refresh but in fact a considerable step up in the overall user-experience.
Dead Trees and PCs: HP’s Innovation Challenge
It’s tough to be too enthusiastic about HP’s plan to merge its printer and computing groups into a single unit. Former EVP of the PSG group Todd Bradley will lead the freshly-minted Printing and Personal Systems Group, as HP attempts to cut costs and “drive innovation” of its product range. Yet HP’s track record in creating exciting, distinctive devices is hardly glowing, and there are some serious pitfalls ahead that could easily derail the new strategy.

HP lays off 275 WebOS employees
Meg Whitman may have big plans for WebOS, the little mobile operating system that couldn't, but it looks like whatever she's planning doesn't require a large portion of the current WebOS development team. The company has laid off 275 employees in its mobile section. Most of the affected employees are engineers, which makes a lot of sense, since HP has no current plans to offer any more WebOS hardware. The laid off workers will join former Palm executive Jon Rubinstein, who voluntarily left HP last month. Some of the employees may be redeployed within HP, but not all.

HP’s Whitman confirms Windows 8 tablet this year
HP may have ditched its WebOS platform along with its corresponding hardware in an abrupt and ill-planned maneuver last year that saw its CEO Leo Apotheker ousted and replaced by Meg Whitman, but it's ready now to give tablets another shot. Although recent rumors suggested that the WebOS HP TouchPad could be revived in 2013, the current focus is on Windows 8. Whitman confirmed during a conference today that HP does indeed plan to release a Windows 8 tablet before the end of this year.

HP CEO: We’re not done with WebOS yet
At HP’s Global Partner Conference in Las Vegas, hardly a word was spoken on their WebOS efforts in 2011. And it’s not hard to see why: the few phones and single TouchPad tablet that sprang from the acquisition of Palm bombed so badly that the only wat to recoup losses was a massive fire sale. But surprisingly, HP’s new CEO Meg Whitman didn’t seem phased: at her keynote this morning, she reiterated HP’s commitment to the WebOS platform.

HP releases Android on TouchPad code to happy hackers
If you follow the tablet market closely, you'll be familiar with HP TouchPad that launched packing webOS and met a quick demise when sales were not good, and the tablet received some poor review scores. Some will also recall that during the TouchPad blowout sale, a few of the tablets allegedly shipped and were running Android out-of-the-box. The version of Android that those tablets were running has now been gifted from HP to the open-source geeks of the world.

Facebook’s IPO, webOS and the Perfect Social Phone
Facebook’s IPO filing gave us an inkling of how much money the social network expects to make when it floats this year, but also a hint of what it could spend it on: the first true Facebook Phone. In among the lengthy IPO documentation were not only details of Facebook’s existing achievements in mobile but a map of the challenges yet to come along with Mark Zuckerberg’s biggest fears for the future. $100m is enough to stage a big attack on the mobile market, though, and there’s one obvious place to start: HP’s webOS.
