Tablet turmoil: HP Touchpad 2 looks to enterprise; Some slate plans axed

Apple's iPad 2 has apparently kicked off some deep, internal soul-searching among rivals; Samsung has already given a public shudder, and now HP, ASUS and Acer are all believed to be shaking up their slate development. According to DigiTimes' sources, HP is considering shifting Touchpad 2 development from its handheld division to its notebook team, in the hope that a more enterprise-centric successor to the HP Touchpad will fare better in the market.

Hanvon brought its HPad A116 along to CES 2011 last month, and now there's apparently a second version for the European market. The Hanvon HPad A112 has a 7-inch 800 x 600 touchscreen, Android 2.2 Froyo and a 3-megapixel camera on the back, along with optional 3G and GPS. The 10.8mm slate has a magnesium alloy frame and brushed stainless steel shell, and Hanvon has whipped up its own handwriting support in the office app.

We've been calling for a webOS-based tablet for years now, and HP has finally delivered with the HP TouchPad. The first of a new HP webOS TouchPad tablet family, it has a 9.7-inch 1024 x 768 capacitive touchscreen and dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 processor, squeezed into a 242 x 190 x 13.7 mm chassis weighing around 740g. It will also help debut the next-generation of Touchstone wireless peripherals and webOS 3.0.

HP Topaz webOS tablet detailed plus Touchstone v2 wireless plans

Further details on HP's Topaz webOS tablet have emerged, detailing the specifications of the 9.7-inch XGA slate we're expecting to hear about at the event on February 9. According to documents finding their way to PreCentral - and which date back to sometime in 2010 - Topaz will use Qualcomm's dual-core 1.2GHz MSM8660 CPU with Adreno 220 graphics, together with dual-band WiFi b/g/n, optional HSPA and, eventually, LTE and CDMA, and a battery good for over 8hrs. More interesting, though, is the Touchstone v2 dock.

With all this talk about HP and Palm's upcoming tablets, perhaps it's just a coincidence that the company has officially filed for a new trademark that, for all intents and purposes, screams out "tablet." At the moment, it's impossible to say whether or not HP plans on using their recently filed for Touchpad name for anything at all, let alone a tablet. But, tablets are mentioned in the filing, if that's any sizable indicator.
