A new jailbreak hack for iOS 5.1.1 on most iPad models plus the iPhone and iPod touch has been released, Absinthe 2.0, allowing for unofficial third-party apps to be installed on Apple's usually locked-down hardware. The handiwork of the Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Teams, Absinthe 2.0 promises one of the quickest jailbreaks to-date, simply a matter of plugging in a USB cable and clicking a button.

Apple Television talk reignites with Sharp patent overlap

Long-standing rumors of a standalone Apple TV set continue to percolate, with suggestions that Foxconn parent Hon Hai's display deal with Sharp, along with fresh Apple panel patents, lend weight to the HDTV whispers. The Cupertino company is apparently working on an advancement of Fringe Field Switching (FSS) systems suitable for HDTV-scale panels, with Patently Apple flagging up a recently granted patent for the TFT LCD display technology. FSS is currently used in Apple's smaller devices, and relies on IPS display technology of which Sharp is a notable patent holder.

Half-million iPhone 4S owners flock to jailbreak hack

Almost half a million iPhone 4S users took advantage of the freshly-released jailbreak for the latest Apple smartphone in the first weekend of availability, it's reported, with over 300,000 iPad 2 owners also hacking their device. The pent-up demand for a jailbreak for Apple A5-based gadgets expressed itself in almost one million new jailbreaks in just over three days, the iPhone Dev Team says, using stats culled from the hack process itself.

Apparently, cracking the A5 was "Not exactly a walk in the park" according to the entire team. The jailbreak is termed GreenPois0n Absinthe and is now available for download on Mac OS X alone. And forget the tethered jailbreak - untethered is where it's at!
