Google To Bring NFC-Based Coupons To Android Phones

Google has been rolling out NFC (Near Field Communication) trials in various cities in its effort to eventually let your Android device replace your wallet. They are partnering up with outside companies to deliver not only NFC-enabled devices but also to help retailers prepare to take NFC transactions. A French point-of-sale device manufacturer, Ingenico, has confirmed that they are working with Google to develop NFC applications and terminals for retailers.

Google Rolls Out Groupon Competition With ‘Google Offers’ Beta Launch In Select Cities

It was leaked back in January that Google was busy at work on a Groupon rival called Google Offers. At the time the service appeared almost identical but later leaked reincarnations suggested that Google may be taking a slightly different approach. Today, however, will be the first day that folks may get a more definitive look on exactly what Google has to offer. Their new coupon service gets an official beta launch today starting in Portland with San Francisco and New York to follow.

Rovio Takes on Nokia with an Angry Call to Arms

In a move that can only be called "absolutely insane yet somehow very sensible," Rovio has re-tweeted a joke sent out by mobile entrepreneur Jan Ole Suhr that notes that the only hope Nokia has of surviving their future with Microsoft is to make sure Rovio creates a version of Angry Birds compatible with Windows Phone 7! Of course there has been no response from Nokia as of yet, while Microsoft has also remained silent on the matter.

Nokia Workers in Finland Take Collective Lunch Break in Protest of Windows Phone 7 Deal

It would appear, according to Finnish paper HS.fi Uutiset that workers at at least one Nokia development location in Tampere, Finland, are walking out in protest of the deal made official this morning between Nokia and Microsoft. While a member of the senior staff at this particular location, Kalle Wedge, noted "Aika moni käytti joustavaa työaikaa," aka "Quite a few people used their flexible working time [their break] to do this protest."
