Yahoo! Maps has added indoor venue mapping, raising its challenge to Google Maps by including internal navigation for more than 75,000 buildings worldwide. The new feature, provided by Nokia's HERE platform, takes mapping indoors in places like shopping centers, even across multiple levels.
Nokia HERE Maps for Windows 8.1 will soon be available for all Windows 8.1 devices, the Finnish firm has confirmed, having previously been an exclusive for Nokia's own Lumia 2520 tablet. The app - which will be supported across desktop, notebook, and tablet form-factors - will be a free download, and support 3D mapping, turn-by-turn navigation, and downloads of maps for offline use.
Google is bringing its latest version of Google Maps out of beta and pushing it to the public, with better integration of search results, smarter route navigation, and easier access to galleries and 3D imagery of points-of-interest. The new version was previewed last year, first as a closed beta and then opened up to those feeling experimental.
This week Google fully recognizes the power of Waze in their maps apps. With Google Maps' update here and now, the 2013 acquisition of Waze has not only been integrated in a real physical way with "Faster route now available" appearances both on Android and in iOS, but Google literally makes the mark in their Google+ release. Navigation app developer Telenav has acquired Skobbler, as it pushes its preference for OpenStreetMap data and ramps up its challenge to Google Maps and Apple Maps. The acquisition, which closed earlier this week and saw Telenav splash out around $19.2m in cash and $4.6m-worth of stock, will see OSM data and services refined in Skobbler's iOS and Android apps integrated into the Telenav Scout app.
Hyundai has revealed the new 2015 Genesis, adding AWD and a head-up display, as well as a stiffer platform than a BMW 5-series, and integration with both Apple's Siri and Google Glass. The new car, which will hit US showrooms this spring, can use the Glass Blue Link app to allow drivers to remotely unlock and start the sedan, locate it in a parking lot, send points-of-interest to the dashboard navigation system, and track down the nearest gas station. Meanwhile, there's also support for the iPhone's "Eyes Free" mode using Siri to control things like Apple Maps, calls, messaging, and more.
When Apple tried to get away from using Google Maps on the iPhone for GPS navigation, its first attempt at its own maps was famously bad. The maps were so bad they led people to the wrong places in some instances and resulted in Apple CEO Tim Cook apologizing and telling iPhone users to take advantage of competitor's products until Apple Maps could be fixed.
Microsoft has released Bing Maps Preview for Windows 8.1, its Google Maps-rivaling navigation app with over seventy high-res 3D cities, Skype and OpenTable integration, street-level photography, and Live Tile support. The new app, hitting the Windows Store today, introduces a new 3D graphics engine which Microsoft says delivers more realistic visuals across a wide range of angles.
