Google Drive incoming to take on Dropbox and iCloud

Google Drive incoming to take on Dropbox and iCloud

Google is preparing to launch a cloud storage service, Google Drive, sources claim, taking on iCloud and Dropbox with free and paid accounts. Set to open for uploads "in the coming weeks or months" the WSJ's insiders say, Google Drive will supposedly undercut Dropbox's paid subscription pricing, which begins at $10 per month for 50GB. A free plan, meanwhile, will offer both individual and business users some cloud-based space without cost, likely ad-supported like free Gmail.

Nevada Legislation allows Google driverless cars to cruise state roads

Nevada Legislation allows Google driverless cars to cruise state roads

Google has its fingers into some many different projects that it can be very hard to keep track of them all. One of the oddest projects that Google has been into is the design and operation of cars that can drive themselves. Interestingly Google chose to use Prius and Audi TT's as their driverless fleet and not the obviously well qualified black 80's Trans Am. We have seen these driverless cars in action before, and to be honest they are a bit disconcerting to see in action.

Google, Uber copy each other in driverless car service push

Google, Uber copy each other in driverless car service push

Here’s an interesting question the folks at Google probably asked themselves not too long ago: how do you pair a human passenger with a driverless car? Aside form looping routes, much like public transportation, the automated car and its human riders have no real way to interact with one another. A new rumor suggests Google is preparing an app, much like Uber, which will likely find a home with their driverless car fleet. Of special interest here is that Google is an Uber investor.

You’re overestimating Google’s driverless cars

You’re overestimating Google’s driverless cars

Never tested in snow or heavy rain, potentially ignoring police, and confused into swerving by crumpled newspaper: Google's self-driving cars face more than a few lingering problems before they're truly ready for the road. The search behemoth's plans to start tests of its control-free "pods" out in public had already collided with California's DMV, which demanded that at least rudimentary steering and pedals be fitted before they'd be road-legal, but that may only be the start of Google's headaches.

Fon inks Qualcomm and Google funding for US social WiFi drive

Communal WiFi hotspot service Fon could be showing up in many more wireless routers in the near future, closing a $14m funding round that will also see the company's technology baked into new Qualcomm chipsets. The new round - led by Qualcomm Ventures but also featuring cash from Google, Deutsche Telekom, and others - will be used to fund Fon's US expansion, having begun quietly offering its routers in America late last year, while the partnership with the chip manufacturer could exponentially increase compatibility with the sharing service.

Is Google Glass for drivers really safe?

Is Google Glass for drivers really safe?

Road safety while using wearable tech like Google Glass is back in the headlines, with the acquittal of one early-adopter of distracted driving charges prompting controversy over what's acceptable to use while you're behind the wheel, and what's in fact dangerous. The ruling on Thursday that Glass wearer Cecilia Abadie would not be fined for sporting the headset after being pulled over for speeding has been heralded by some "Explorers" as validation that the technology is road-worthy. Nonetheless, the question remains, is Glass really safe - not to mention legal - for drivers to use while on the road?
