Sony taking legal action over Geohot PS3 hack

Sony is attempting to block access to the PS3 hacking tools developed by Geohot and others, requesting a temporary restraining order and claiming that the TPM-circumnavigating system has already been used to pirate games. According to copies of the complaints at Geohot's site, Sony is demanding that all mention of the tools and the tools themselves be taken offline, as well as the impounding of Geohot's own equipment.

Geohot demos custom PS3 firmware [Video]

After taking Sony to task for yanking "Other OS" support from the PS3 in their latest firmware update, v3.21, George Hotz - aka geohot - has followed up on his promise to develop a custom firmware build that bypasses the new restriction.  The new firmware, which is yet to be publicly released, maintains the ability to install third-party OSes on the PS3, but without the gamer losing access to the PlayStation Network.

Hotz got into trouble after publishing an encryption key and software tools in January that let Playstation owners gain complete control of the game console, or jailbreak it. He was accused of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, in addition to other laws.

GeoHot absconds to South American and sabotages HDDs handed over to courts

Apparently, George Hotz didn’t like the odds of beating Sony in the suit that Sony is bringing against him for breaking the PS3 utterly and completely. Sony as not happy at all about the hack Hotz offered up to the public that left the PS3 totally open to the owner's whims. I mentioned back in February that a judge presiding over the case had ordered Hotz to turn his HDDs over for inspection.
