iOS 5 slams door on iPhone firmware downgrades

Apple is reportedly preparing to ramp up the preventative measures it uses to prevent iOS device owners from restoring older firmware versions, a system often used as part of jailbreak and/or unlocking hacks. As of iOS 5, the iPhone Dev Team reports, Apple will be stepping up the authentication process on the "APTicket" which deems whether a particular firmware version can be installed on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch or not. Even those owners who have "saved their blobs" - aka keeping a record of SHSH details for each firmware version - so that they can backtrack to earlier, more hack-friendly iterations of iOS will be affected. Facebook snags hacker Geohot

iPhone hacker George Hotz - aka Geohot - is apparently now working at Facebook, though it's unclear what his role at the social network entails. Best known for his hacks of the Apple iPhone, including unlocking SIM-locked handsets so that they can be used on other networks, as well as for being the target of a Sony lawsuit over PS3 modifications, Hotz confirmed his new role using his Facebook account. Sony Targeted for Another Attack this Weekend

Sony has been a major target of hackers ever since it's ill-fated lawsuit against George "Geohot" Hotz. The PlayStation Network attack has drawn attention from the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General. Sony responded via letter to the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade on Wednesday, defending their response to the PSN attack. Dev-Team untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.3 available

The gaggle of geeks at the Dev-Team are the folks that bring iPhone fans the jailbreaks and unlocks that they can use to set their iPhones free. Sometimes these jailbreaks required the iPhone to be tethered to computer and other times the jailbreak is able to be done untethered. The Dev-Team has announced that the jailbreak tool created by @i0n1c for iOS 4.3.1 is still working to unlock the iPhone on the new 4.3.3 iOS version. Read The Full Story

Data Security Expert: Sony Knew It Was Using Outdated Software Before PSN Breach

Sony versus hackers continues and the company may now be more hot water based on revelations from the latest testimony to Congress on Wednesday. A data security expert from Purdue University, Dr. Gene Spafford told Congress that security experts knew Sony was still using outdated versions of the Apache Web server software, which did not have a firewall installed. Sony moving PSN data center in hack response

Sony still refuses to detail the exact exploit used to hack the PlayStation Network and its Qriocity streaming service, but has admitted that as well as updating the software security of the network, it is physically "moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location." If you'll take the time to remember back a few days ago, a lawsuit between Sony and PlayStation 3 hacker George "Geohotz" Hotz ended in an agreement that Hotz would never again tinker with the game console or any other Sony product ever again. During the suit, Hotz had thousands of dollars donated to his name in order to hire legal defense so that he might have a fair shot at defending himself against the army of legal beans Sony had/has working for them.
