CES 2013 wrap-up: Gaming gets the spotlight

We're used to CES being all about gadgets and technology in general, but this year, there were actually a surprising number of major gaming announcements. NVIDIA positioned itself front and center, leading the charge and talking about a number of new products and services that are bound to get any gamer bouncing up and down with glee. Perhaps the biggest reveal NVIDIA's press conference held was the reveal of Project SHIELD, a new Android-based games console that's packing the company's latest mobile processor, the Tegra 4.

This year at CES we saw one whole heck of a lot of PCs, quite a few of them working with Windows 8 - but most of them focusing on their unique hardware offerings to the point where Microsoft's offering seemed almost secondary. One cannot deny the influence of the touch-friendly nature of Windows 8 on the other hand, and starting right away with the very first PC we had hands-on time with, touchscreen controls were right at the center of our attention: the Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC is first on our list of hands-on deliveries.

If we were to list the companies that have enjoyed a really, really big CES 2013, NVIDIA would probably rank toward the top. Not only did the company announce new and interesting things like GeForce Experience and NVIDIA GRID, but it also unleashed the Tegra 4 mobile processor on the world and introduced us to Project SHIELD, a new Android-based gaming console of sorts that has everyone talking.

Welcome to Thursday evening everyone - just one more work day to go and we'll be at the weekend once again. This afternoon started with a bang, with Spotify holding a press conference to announce a number of things. Perhaps most importantly, the service has 1 million paying subscribers in the US, with 5 million worldwide. The company also launched Spotify Collections and the Spotify Music Graph today, announcing a new web app for all users too. Finally, we found out that Metallica's full catalog of music has been added to Spotify, so all of you metal fans have a reason to celebrate this evening.

Support for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 800M collection of graphics processors is now ready alongside several other sets of processing hardware for the NVIDIA GameStream experience. What this means for NVIDIA SHIELD owners is that their gaming laptop, if too large for any given situation, can be used to stream games to their NVIDIA SHIELD. This ability will be activated immediately if not soon for a number of Kepler and Maxwell based GPU-toting notebooks.

This week at GDC 2014, NVIDIA announced that they were working with Respawn Entertainment to bring on a number of GameWorks-centric enhancements to Titanfall in the immediate future. While many top-tier games work with NVIDIA before the release of their titles, it would appear that this move is happening after-the-fact. Better late than never - this release will have upgrades that bring what NVIDIA promises will be "the best game experience possible" in all arenas.

In Titanfall, the developers at Respawn Entertainment have made a massive name for themselves in the industry at the same time as they've ushered in a new generation in multiplayer gaming - a new generation that's long overdue. The team at EA Games have made no secret about Titanfall being a game-changer, and based our tests with the final build of Titanfall in the real world with real, live servers for Xbox One and Windows, we'd have to agree. Titanfall quite simply takes every genre it belongs to out a whole new door.

The Titanfall tie-ins continue with this exclusive launch that’ll also be bringing in full Twitch live game streaming integration to Xbox One. This launch has been tipped by Major Nelson in a suggestion that "you can start broadcasting from your Xbox One next week". It’s also been confirmed by a tip from the Titanfall launch experience with Microsoft and SXSW next week - the game itself launches on the 11th.
