Garmin-ASUS have again delayed the release of the nuvifone G60, blaming the complexities of fresh hardware and custom software.  The touchscreen smartphone - which was first announced back in January 2008 - is now expected to arrive in the second half of 2009, potentially in excess of 12 months delay over the original Q2 2008 launch schedule.

Since the announcement of Nuvifone by Garmin, Vince and I have been very interested in seeing the device personally. While I was unable to go to Barcelona this year, Vince is taking one for the team and managed to have one on one time with the Nuvifone.

I could go on about how similar to the iPhone this phone is, but I won’t, I’ll simply summarize it by saying that I have an iPod Touch, and I love it, but I think this Garmin Nuvifone would more than fill the smartphone void in my digital life. It has a proprietary Garmin OS, HSDPA, Quad-band GSM, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 3.5” touchscreen (not sure if its multi-touch, but that definitely is the same size screen as the iPhone).

The first nuvifone took its time reaching the market and met with disappointing reviews when it finally made it, so you could argue the bar is set low for the Garmin-Asus nuvifone A50.  The first in the model range to run Android, we grabbed some hands-on time with the A50 at MWC 2010 this week; turns out, the partnership have learnt plenty from their first efforts, and while the smartphone won't knock HTC off their perch it joins the ringing death-knell of standalone PNDs.  More first-impressions after the cut.
