Upon that foundation of disappointment comes a ray of hope, however: documents have leaked showing the game is both real and being developed at this moment, and by all accounts it seems it will be set in Boston. Casting documents for the project, codenamed Institute, have been confirmed as real.

Tensions between the US and Europe continue to escalate, after the EU voted to begin an "in-depth inquiry" into allegations that the NSA and other US security agencies bugged EU premises as well as regularly monitor the communications European citizens. The Civil Liberties Committee investigation - supported by 483 votes to 98 (with 65 abstentions) - sees the EU demand full details from the US on how, exactly, programs like PRISM affect EU member states, in addition to exploring greater protections for whistleblowers like Edward Snowden.

Samsung EVP: Apple war fallout is innovation loss despite financial win

Samsung exec David Eun has blamed the ongoing legal battle with Apple for hindering innovation, pointing out that while the Korean firm may benefit financially from each iPhone sale, overall the consumer tech industry suffers. Speaking at the D:Dive Into Media conference this week, executive vice president Eun refused to be drawn on more specific insights around the regular court appearances legal teams from the two companies have made, but said that it represented "a loss" to innovation overall, despite Samsung's own efforts to push its software portfolio.

Samsung down, Nokia up, Google glib: The Apple fallout continues

Dismayed investors have wiped almost 7.5-percent from Samsung's stock as the aftermath of the $1bn Apple trial continues to ripple, though Nokia saw a surprise burst of support as Google comments failed to reassure. The search giant attempted to distance "the core Android operating system" from Apple's patent claims, but the market obviously didn't see sufficient support and sold Samsung shares in droves. Nokia has been a surprising beneficiary, however, the Finnish company's stock price up almost 11-percent at time of publication.

With MegaUpload facing irretrievable data loss later this week and rival services locking down their file sharing options, attention has turned to well-used but clandestine rival RapidShare AG and whether it will occupy the cloud storage vacuum or be next in line for the FBI's attentions. Worlds apart from the showy Kim Dotcom, MegaUpload's CEO, RapidShare founder Christian Schmid has focused his attentions on lobbying the US government, the WSJ reports, spending over $600,000 since 2010 to persuade them the site is a legitimate file repository and not a haven for copyright infringement.

MegaUpload shut-down fallout continues, with rival file-sharing sites FileSonic and Uploaded.to each dramatically slimming their services to avoid allegations of copyright infringement. FileSonic has ceased any new sharing functionality whatsoever, the site now saying that "our services can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally," while Uploaded.to has blocked US traffic though remains accessible elsewhere in the world.

Kin fallout continues: only 503 sold tips insider, red faces all round at Microsoft

In the aftermath of Kin's demise, details of the mis-management and general botched effort continue to seep out of Microsoft.  Business Insider quotes an anonymous Microsoft employee who says there's "embarrassment all over campus from the rank and file about the Kin announcement" while John Gruber has heard that Verizon sold a grand total of 503 Kin handsets; that fits in with previously rumored figures, though Microsoft still insist they shipped at least twice that amount.

If you're like many gamers out there, you're anxiously awaiting the release of Fallout 3, Bethesda's latest offering, then you'll be glad to hear the time is almost here. Fallout 3 for Xbox 360 leaks to BitTorrent & Usenet

Much anticipated Xbox 360 game Fallout 3 has already appeared on BitTorrent and Usenet file sharing sites, three weeks in advance of its official release.  The 6.52GB file requires a modified Xbox 360 to run; currently there's no sign of the PC or PS3 versions of the title for download.  Early figures suggest 2,500 gamers on one BitTorrent portal alone have already downloaded Fallout 3.
