The iPad Facebook app has become the hostage of tense negotiations between Apple and the social network, reports claim, with arguments around licensing and strategy adding months of delays to the feature-complete software's release. The app - which leaked back in July - has hit headlines again after the lead developer, Jeff Verkoeyen, revealed his frustrations at Facebook constantly shifting the launch date, and how those frustrations were part of his motivation to jump ship to Google. However, there's now talk that Facebook will officially reveal the iPad app at Apple's iPhone 5 launch event, expected to take place on October 4.

Facebook has denied reports that HTC is making a Facebook-branded smartphone, with a spokesperson suggesting "the rumors around there being something more to this HTC device are overblown." According to Dan Rose, Facebook's head of business development, the speculation is simply over-assumption based on "just another example of a manufacturer who has taken our public APIs and integrated them into their device in an interesting way."

Facebook for Feature Phones launched with free data on certain carriers

Facebook has announced a new mobile app, targeted at regular cellphone users rather than those with smartphones. Facebook for Feature Phones is a Java app, and will reportedly work on more than 2,500 devices from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG and others, giving access to the homescreen, wall posts, photo galleries and even contacts synchronization.

The app has also been announced alongside a new deal with select carriers, which will - for a 90 day period - be offering free data access to Facebook for Feature Phones, as with Facebook Zero. Fourteen operators have signed up to the scheme, with more in the pipeline.

Facebook has backtracked on controversial plans to allow users to share their address and cellphone number with advertisers, after facing vocal criticism from privacy advocates. Announced on Friday, Facebook billed the option as a way to "easily share your address and mobile phone with a shopping site to streamline the checkout process, or sign up for up-to-the-minute alerts on special deals directly to your mobile phone"; however, while the standard privacy tools were offered, many believed the social networking site had a greater responsibility to notify users when they were giving out the data.
